Real Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente has urged the club’s fans to stop whistling the players during home games as it is making them “weaker”.
Llorente has started in each of Madrid’s last two matches at the Bernabeu, during which the home players were whistled by the fans.
Why are Real Madrid fans unhappy? Five key things to know:
- Zinedine Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo left Madrid over the summer, marking the end of an era at the Bernabeu.
- Former Spain boss Julen Lopetegui took over but was sacked after just four months following a 5-1 defeat to Barcelona in La Liga.
- Madrid hired Santiago Solari until the end of the season but the team’s performances haven’t drastically improved.
- The 3-0 Champions League loss to CSKA Moscow was the club’s heaviest ever home defeat in Europe, drawing whistles from the fans.
- The players were whistled again during Saturday’s 1-0 La Liga victory over Real Vallecano.
Llorente, 23, has played eight times across all competitions for Madrid’s first team so far this season.
And the defensive midfielder believes the team will start to perform better if the fans get behind the players.
“Whistles get to the players and make us weaker, all of us would rather fans applauded,” Llorente told Spanish outlet Marca (via Football Espana).
“When you hear your teammates being whistled it is not a nice feeling and it annoys me, because we are stronger when we are united together.
“Everyone at Real Madrid is used to winning things but it is not helpful when fans voice their displeasure like this, it is not encouragement.
“Fans should applaud and encourage players to help us increase our chances of winning.”
Can Real Madrid still win La Liga?
Real Madrid currently sit fourth in La Liga behind Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and leaders Barcelona.
They are five points off top spot having played 16 games so far, the same number as fierce rivals Barcelona, and they lead sixth-placed Real Betis by four points.
For all of their poor performances, they remain remarkably close to Barcelona’s points tally. However, Barcelona have scored 22 more goals than Real Madrid’s 24.
Regardless of whether Solari brings silverware to the Bernabeu, Madrid will almost certainly be looking for a new manager next summer.
They have been heavily linked with Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, although Manchester United might have something to say about that.
Pochettino is reportedly United’s priority target following the sacking of former Madrid coach Jose Mourinho.
