Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes his side will finish the season above Everton despite currently sitting below them in the table.
A 1-0 victory against Cardiff City the week before last was enough to take the Toffees above Mourinho’s men in the table, as United could only muster a goalless stalemate at home to Crystal Palace.
The Red Devils did manage to close the gap on their Merseyside counterparts at the weekend after drawing against Southampton, as both sides now sit level on 22 points with Everton ahead on goal difference.
Marco Silva’s side have been in good form of late, despite a last-gasp defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, but Mourinho is adamant that the 13-time Premier League champions will place above Everton come the end of the campaign.
“I can agree even though the investment Everton made was phenomenal,” he said (via BBC Sport). “I don’t think Everton will be in front of United by the end of the season.”
After only picking up a point at the St Mary’s Stadium, Mourinho reportedly told Brazilian television network RedeTV after the match that his side will need a “miracle” if they were to finish in the top four.
When asked by reporters to shed light on his comments, Mourinho said: “If I used that word, it is not what I think at all.
“I don’t think we need a miracle. We don’t need to waste points where we don’t need to waste.
“Before Palace, I said my target would be end of December in top four. Now the target has changed. Now we have to try to be very close to these positions. We need not to be so unlucky with problems that we have. We need some players to perform.”
United play host to an in-form Arsenal on Wednesday with Mourinho’s side currently eight points off a Champions League place. Fourth spot is currently being occupied by Arsenal who leapfrogged Spurs on Sunday after North London Derby win.
Rival fans react to Jose Mourinho’s Everton prediction
Mourinho’s latest comments have been met by hysteria from rival fans, who appear to be savouring every moment of the club’s current plight.

Wouldn't surprise me if Mourinho come in with a bid for Gomes in the January transfer window to destabilise Everton and improve Man U in the battle for 6th place.

Remember when #Mourinho called wenger a "specialist in failure" Now he's coming out with stuff like this: "I can agree Man Utd should never be in seventh, in spite of the phenomenal investment Everton made and obviously the great improvement in their team from last season"

United started the season with title ambitions. Then it became about the top four. Now Mourinho’s talking about a top six and finishing above Everton. There’s a worrying pattern here #MUFChttps://t.co/NtF4AbE3V5

Mourinho is blaming @Everton for his woes at United.
The first manager to spend £1 BILLION on players in his career, now feels Little Old Everton, (who he bought Lukaku from for 7.5-10% of his total spend) are passing him by financially.
What a time

Jose Mourinho:
1. "I don’t think Everton will be in front of Manchester United by the end of the season.
2. "I think at the end of the season the top six will be the teams you think."Me:
I think we should all stay quiet for the time being.— Gregory Ioannidis (@LawTop20) December 4, 2018
Fulham + struggling = sacked manager. Southampton + struggling = sacked manager. @ManUtd + struggling = waiting for a miracle. Clueless club

We’ll be having “six pointers” with the likes of Cardiff and Huddersfield soon.

I think he's lost all sanity now. He was never a Manchester United manager to begin with.

So that’s Man Utd’s aim a top six finish. Unbelievable
