John Aldridge believes Mohamed Salah’s 44-goal haul from last season is form the Liverpool forward “cannot replicate again”, but has backed him for another Premier League Golden Boot.
The Reds host fierce rivals Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday and can reclaim the Premier League top spot from reigning champions Manchester City, who are currently clear by two points.
Despite critical suggestions that Salah was a ‘one-season-wonder’ in some quarters, the Egyptian is now top of the Premier League goalscorer standings, level with Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on 10 goals.
And, speaking to FansBet ahead of one of the biggest clashes in world football, Aldridge admitted that Salah will be after another Golden Boot, even if he cannot repeat the scintillating form of last season that saw him set a new record for goals scored within a single season in the Premier League (32).
The former Liverpool striker said: “To score fourty-odd goals last year, 43, 44 goals, whatever it be, took some doing and he’s never going to replicate that.
“But he’s starting to come into his own. All of a sudden, he’s top [of the goalscoring charts].
“He wants another Golden Boot and that will fire him on. He’s starting to hit form and hopefully, for the right time for us and the wrong time for Man United.”
Salah featured against Manchester United twice last season but is yet to score a goal against the Red Devils.
Premier League title-winner and United’s former youth academy director Brian McClair appears to be a keen admirer of Salah, going as far to say he would have the former Roma man at Old Trafford.
While previewing Sunday’s game for FansBet, he added: “I was talking to someone, only a few days ago, who is a big Liverpool fan saying a few people were getting disgruntled about him.
“If they don’t want him, they can send him over here. I think he would fit nicely into Manchester United’s team,” McClair joked.
Salah will have the chance to change his goalscoring record for Liverpool against Manchester United, coached by his former manager Jose Mourinho, when they meet at 4 PM GMT on Sunday.
