Sarri admits getting two Chelsea "leaders" new deals could be tricky

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has said he would like to keep Cesc Fabregas and David Luiz at the club, despite both players being out of contract at the end of the season.

Fabregas and Luiz are both now advancing into their 30s and Chelsea’s usual policy dictates that the club only offer a one-year contract extension to such players.

According to Sarri, that policy has become a sticking point in contract negotiations but the Italian is confident a compromise can still be found.

“David and Cesc are leaders, and so I think it’s very important for me, for the staff, also for their team-mates, if they stay with us,” Sarri told a press conference, according to BBC Sport.

“The club want a short contract and the players want a long contract. And so it’s difficult for this reason. I think at the end we can find a solution.”

Ruben Loftus-Cheek to stay at Stamford Bridge

One man who Sarri is certain will be staying at Stamford Bridge is England international Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

The midfielder enjoyed immense success on loan at Crystal Palace last season, earning a call-up to England’s World Cup squad in the process.

However, the 22-year-old has only made four substitute Premier League appearances for the Blues this season, clocking up 117 minutes on the pitch – although he has managed two goals during that time, including in Chelsea’s win over Fulham on Sunday.

But Sarri has expressed his desire to keep Loftus-Cheek at Chelsea amid rumours of another loan move in January, with the Lewisham-born player scoring three goals in four games in the Europa League so far this season.

“No. I want him to stay with me, to stay with us, I think there is no chance,” said Sarri when asked if Loftus-Cheek would be allowed to leave on loan.

Chelsea travel to Wolves on Wednesday as they attempt to close the seven-point gap between them and Manchester City, though that could be extended as City take on Watford on Tuesday.
