Manchester United youth starlets Mason Greenwood and James Garner are both in the first team squad to play Valencia at the Mestalla Stadium on Wednesday.
With the Red Devils already safely navigating their way into the knockout stages of the competition, Jose Mourinho looks to be using this match as an opportunity to assess some of the younger players that are coming through the ranks at Old Trafford.
Mason Greenwood – Is the Manchester United youngster ready to make an impact at first team level?
- 17-year-old striker Greenwood trained with the first team at Carrington on Tuesday.
- Both him and fellow United youngster Garner are part of the squad that have travelled to Spain.
- First team striker Romelu Lukaku has endured a tough start to the season.
- Greenwood has netted a whopping 18 goals in 15 appearances at youth level this term.
This is also something of a nothing game for Valencia, who are guaranteed to finish third in Group H no matter the outcome of Wednesday’s match.
17-year-old Greenwood has played most of his football with United’s U18 side this term but has featured for the U23s at times. He’s been a regular for the U19s in their UEFA Youth League campaign and has already found the net 18 times this season.
He is rated as one of the hottest prospects to come through the United academy in recent years and signed a professional contract at the start of the season.
He did feature on Manchester United’s pre-season tour in the summer, so Mourinho is no stranger to his talents.
Greenwood has played for England at U17 level and played in the Algarve Tournament in Portugal earlier this year.
The youngster actually started his career as a midfield player but has gradually moved into a more attacking position.
What are the chances of Greenwood making his first United appearance on Wednesday?
Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford have both travelled to Spain, so Greenwood is probably only likely to appear on the bench at best.
A number of United’s players appear to have been rested for the match, including David De Gea and Nemanja Matic.
Mourinho has, however, confirmed that Paul Pogba will start United’s final group match as he looks to regain his place in the Red Devils’ Premier League starting XI.
Alexis Sanchez, Victor Lindelof, Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling, Matteo Darmian and Diogo Dalot are currently all out with injury issues and did not fly to Spain.
