Will Ralph Hasenhuttle be in charge for Southampton vs Spurs?

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to bounce back from their North London derby defeat when they face Southampton on Wednesday.

Spurs lost 4-2 to Arsenal on Sunday and were leapfrogged by their rivals in the Premier League, while Southampton’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United proved to be the final straw for manager Mark Hughes, who was sacked on Monday and has been replaced by former RB Leipzig manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Match preview

On the face of it, Southampton’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Saturday may sound like a good result, but in reality it was the perfect summary of Saints’ poor start to the season.

Mark Hughes’ men started off well against the Red Devils, taking a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Stuart Armstrong and Cedric Soares. But, as was so often the case under Hughes, Southampton failed to hold onto their advantage and United were level before half-time.

It meant Southampton had dropped 20 points from winning positions since Hughes took charge in March, eight more than any other Premier League side in that time, and proved to be the Welshman’s final act as manager of the south coast club. Austrian coach Ralph Hasenhuttl was the club’s first choice option to replace Hughes and was confirmed as new manager on Wednesday.

Just a day later and Spurs saw a lead of their own turn into defeat as they were beaten 4-2 by rivals Arsenal at the Emirates. Mauricio Pochettino’s men had initially fought back from a goal down to turn the game on its head before half-time, but crumbled under pressure after the break, failing to build on the impressive 3-1 win over Chelsea the week prior.

Both sides will be looking to bounce back immediately with a win on Wednesday.

Where can I watch live?

Tottenham’s game against Southampton is not available to watch for UK residents.

Will Ralph Hasenhuttl be in charge for this match?

Hasenhuttl was confirmed as Southampton’s new manager on Wednesday morning but won’t be starting work with his new club until Thursday.

The former Leipzig boss is expected to be at Wembley for the match but won’t have any say in the team selection or tactics.

Former club goalkeeper Kelvin Davis is to take charge of the Saints as they look to pick up a positive result in North London.

Should Pochettino move on?

Tottenham have come on leaps and bounds since Mauricio Pochettino took charge in 2014, moving from Europa League spot contenders to genuine top four challengers.

As a result, despite failing to win a trophy, Pochettino has been linked with a move away from Spurs, with Manchester United touted as the next step for the Argentine. Jose Mourinho is looking increasingly likely to leave at some point within the next six months and now could be the time for Pochettino to take that step and move on to even brighter things.

Can Southampton survive?

Hasenhuttl has a tough task on his hands if he’s to turn things around at St Mary’s. The Saints have won just one game in the Premier League this season, the lowest of any team, and many will point straight to their defence as the reason for that.

The south coast club have conceded 26 goals in their 14 games so far, with only three teams having worse defensive records in the Premier League. Their goal tally of 12 is also one of the worst in the top flight, despite having created the fifth-most chances.

Head-to-head

Tottenham have enjoyed a lot of success against Southampton in recent years, losing just one of their last 12 games in all competitions against the Saints. In total, Spurs have racked up 80 wins to Southampton’s 62 with 49 games ending level.

Team news

Tottenham have been handed a boost ahead of Wednesday’s game, with Kieran Trippier expected to return having missed the last three games through injury. However, Spurs will be without Jan Vertonghen who is suspended following his red card against Arsenal, while Mousa Dembele, Erik Lamela, Victor Wanyama and Davinson Sanchez are all injured.

Meanwhile, Southampton will be without the suspended Mario Lemina who received his fifth yellow card of the season against Manchester United. Michael Obafemi, Danny Ings and Ryan Bertrand are all doubts.

Predicted Tottenham XI: Lloris; Trippier, Foyth, Alderweireld, Davies; Sissoko, Dier, Alli; Eriksen, Son; Kane.

Predicted Southampton XI:  McCarthy; Yoshia, Stephens, Vestergaard; Cedric, Hojbjerg, Romeu, Bertrand; Armstrong, Redmond; Gabbiadini.

Squawka Prediction

Southampton may want to prove themselves in front of their new manager, but a Tottenham side that will still be hurting from that loss to Arsenal should be too much for them. 3-0.
