Ex-Tottenham and Portsmouth forward confirms to Barcelona transfer

Sassuolo forward Kevin-Prince Boateng has confirmed that he will move to Barcelona in a surprise loan deal for the remainder of the season.

Boateng, 31, is expected to join the ranks in Catalonia on a temporary basis but Barca will reportedly have the option to make his move permanent in the summer.

Why do Barca want Kevin-Prince Boateng? Five key things to know…

  1. Barcelona sold their only back-up centre forward last week, with Munir completing a move to Sevilla.
  2. As such the club have been seeking reinforcements in the form of a striker.
  3. The likes of Carlos Vela, Alvaro Morata and even Fernando Llorente have been linked with a move to the Camp Nou.
  4. But Ernesto Valverde has opted for Boateng who has impressed in a false nine role for Sassuolo this campaign.
  5. The ex-Spurs and Portsmouth forward has scored five goals this season despite a few injury setbacks.

The former Ghana international will return to La Liga having previously enjoyed the 2016/17 season with Las Palmas, where he scored 10 goals in 29 appearances.

Sassuolo general director Giovanni Carnevali flew to Barcelona on Monday to iron out the details, and Boateng will now join the 10th club of his career despite only relocating to Modena in the summer.

Boateng has played for some of Europe’s biggest clubs during his peripatetic journey across the continent, including the likes of AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Schalke 04 and Eintracht Frankfurt, but this latest move will be seen as the biggest of his career.

His arrival has come at just the right time for Valverde with Ousmane Dembele expected to be out of action for the next 15 days after spraining his ankle.

The former Portsmouth player spoke with reporters following the announcement of the deal, insisting that despite the fact that he is a massive fan of arch-rivals Real Madrid, he can’t wait to get on the scoresheet for Barcelona in the next El Clasico between the two sides.

Boateng said: “Barça, I’m coming! I’m sad to leave Sassuolo but is a great chance. Don’t ask me about Real Madrid… is just the past! I only want to focus on Barcelona and I hope to score at Bernabéu for the next Clásico”
