Everton manager Marco Silva has condemned the sporadic use of VAR after his side’s 3-2 defeat away to Millwall in the FA Cup fourth round.
A last-minute goal from the Championship side confirmed their place in the next round at the expense of their Premier League opposition.
What is the issue with VAR? Here is what you need to know…
- Everton bowed out of the FA Cup yesterday in a disappointing performance against Millwall.
- However, Millwall’s second goal should have been ruled out for handball by goalscorer Jake Cooper.
- VAR has been used in some games rather than all to the frustration of Silva.
- Such is the equipment needed to use VAR, not all stadiums have the facilities to host it.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Silva was furious with both the decision making by the match officials and the lack of VAR coverage, which would have aided his side yesterday evening.
Pointing out the unfairness of not using VAR in all FA Cup ties, Silva said: “You have to do it for all the games. You have to be fair.
“If the competition has VAR for some stadiums then it has to have it in all.
“It was a clear handball. I’m sure handball is not allowed in football. We had seven, eight players in the penalty area. They all see that it’s handball, so it’s really difficult that the referee cannot see that also.
“And then it’s also on the big screen, thousands of people see it there but the referee didn’t see it again.
“It was really strange in that moment.”
Silva is a man under pressure
Joining the club in the summer, Silva was tasked with transforming Everton into an attacking side intent on challenging the Premier League’s top-six.
However, 23 games into his first league season with the Toffees and Silva finds his side languishing in 11th place, a massive 14 points off of sixth-placed Manchester United.
With a Europa League spot a realistic aim for a club of Everton’s stature, they seem well-off the pace to challenge for qualification via the Premier League.
Their exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Millwall was perhaps their last chance of securing Europa League football for next season.
The next month or so could be key for Silva and his future at Goodison Park. The club face Huddersfield away on Tuesday.
