Newcastle are edging ever-closer to breaking their transfer record, with Atlanta United Miguel Almiron pictured at the airport on his way to England.
The Magpies have reportedly agreed a fee in the region of £20m for the creative midfielder, who will become the club’s first January signing.
How important is the signing of Miguel Almiron? Five things to know…
- Newcastle’s current transfer record is £16.5m paid for Michael Owen in 2005.
- That 14-year wait now looks set to end with the fee agreed for Almiron £3.5m more than that of Owen.
- The creative playmaker has played 70 times for Atlanta United, scoring 22 and assisting on 21 occasions.
- Newcastle have struggled for goals this season, finding the back of the net just 21 times in the Premier League.
- Almiron will be seen as a real coup for the club after Atlanta United lowered their £30m valuation.
Rafa Benitez has made no secret of his desire to bolster his squad this transfer window, with the Spaniard eager to recruit reinforcements in the club’s battle for Premier League survival.
Newcastle have been languishing outside the relegation zone for the majority of the campaign, currently sitting 14th in the league after a sensational win over current champions Man City.
The acquisition of Almiron will add some real firepower in the final third for Benitez, an area the Magpies have been lacking, with only two clubs scoring less than them in the league this season.
Ahead of his proposed move the Paraguay international has now been photographed at the Atlanta airport prior to his journey to Tyneside.

The 24-year-old posed for the photo with his agent Daniel Campos, and he will now make the flight across the Atlantic to finalise the details of his contract and complete a medical.
The move comes after Newcastle bounced back to beat Man City 2-1 on home territory on Tuesday night to climb them up the table and five points clear of the relegation zone.
How fans reacted…
Atlanta United fans couldn’t hide their sorrow at seeing their prized asset leave the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, while Newcastle fans seemed confused that the club are actually breaking a transfer record.

Almiron leaving #ATLUTD is surely sad, mainly because he's one of the best athletes at his sport that we've seen in ATL pro sports. That being said, it's great that Atlanta could propel a player to one of (if not THE) best leagues in the world. Good luck, Miggy! #UniteAndConquer

I’m sad. Miggy is the footballer I think we’d all want to be. Joyful, skillful, appreciative. Genuinely gonna miss him.

Almiron to is BIG not for the short term but for the long term because now when @ATLUTD recruit and “promise” to be your “stepping stone” to bigger and better things…it’s real NOT fake. #MLS

Thank you for everything, Miguel Almiron. You united, and you conquered. #Champion #ATLUTD pic.twitter.com/6X1jrvjbIk

It's grand that #nufc intend to break their 14 year transfer record, but before we get too excited, we sold Mitro for more than we're spending on this guy.
Looking at it another way, this guy is only £5m more than our record signing in 1996.

Rafa paying for it himself?
