Crystal Palace have agreed a loan deal with Chelsea for striker Michy Batshuayi.
The Belgian forward had been keen on a move away from his previous loan club Valencia after scoring just once in 15 league games in Spain.
Why have Palace gambled on the misfiring striker? Five things to know…
- Michy Batshuayi started his career at Standard Liege, where he scored 44 in 120 matches.
- In 2014 he moved to French side Marseille, where he hit 33 in 78 games.
- Chelsea spent £33.2m to bring the forward to London in 2016.
- However he never forced his way into first-team reckoning consistently, making 53 appearances in two seasons.
- Crystal Palace, who are 15th in the league, have scored just 24 goals this season.
Chelsea were committed to selling the player this window, to shave down its 42-man strong loan cohort.
Both Real Betis and West Ham were reported to have agreed deals with the Blues but it’s Palace who ultimately secured the signature of the Belgium international, according to Sky Sports.
Spurs had been reported to be interested in acquiring the services of the player but Chelsea reportedly asked for £8m for a short-term loan deal, plus £1m to Batshuayi’s representatives. This would have been four-times what the Stamford Bridge club had asked of Betis and West Ham.
Tottenham were thought to have been Batshuayi’s first-choice.
But the player with 19 goals in 53 games for Chelsea has signed with Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace on loan.
Crystal Palace had previously agreed a deal with Marseille for £31.6m back in 2016, however the striker ultimately ended up in west London.
Crystal Palace fans react to the move…
The Palace view seemed to be generally positive.

Benteke and Batshuayi Belgium connection up front

At least he is better player than Bentake

And Tottenham fans…
While Spurs fans saw the missing out on the striker as typical.
When spurs last signed a player Black Panther wasn’t even out yet, Avicii and Stephen Hawking were still alive and Gareth Southgate was still just a boring football manager

Let’s be fair now, Tielemans and Batshuayi would have been perfect for Spurs this window. Yet again, Levy can’t put a hand in his pocket. #ENICOUT #LevyOut #COYS

Can’t believe we have turned down the opportunity of getting Batshuayi on loan. If true we have missed a trick. #spurs #TransferDeadlineDay

And the West Ham fans…
Were fairly down that Palace was a bigger draw than themselves.
What a signing Michy Batshuayi would be for Palace! Always wanted him at West Ham, should have put your hands in your pockets Sullivan and Gold. ⚒ #DeadlineDay

I mean, Batshuayi is very overrated and I'm glad he's not signing for West Ham… But, if he ends up signing for #CPFC, that's a mint signing for them. Prob bag the winner v West Ham next weekend too. Irons.
