Spurs are preparing to end their transfer drought with a bargain £20m move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot, according to reports.
Mauricio Pochettino has had to make do without any new additions this season, as chairman Danial Levy remains unwilling to loosen the club’s purse strings.
Will Adrien Rabiot leave PSG? Five key things to know…
- The Frenchman, who earns £55,000 per week, is unhappy to be receiving significantly less than his colleagues at PSG.
- Rabiot has been forced to train with the reserves after falling out with PSG manager Thomas Tuchel.
- His contract with PSG expires this summer and clubs including Liverpool, Tottenham and Barcelona have shown interest, with the latter previously in the driving seat.
- But, according to reports, Spurs are set to table a £20m bid for the French midfielder before the transfer window closes on Thursday.
- For Rabiot to be allowed to leave in January, PSG will have to sign Everton’s Idrissa Gueye.
Tottenham failed to sign a single player last summer but their frugality could be suspended this month as they look to land a highly-talented midfielders at a heavily reduced price, according to the reports in France.
The Frenchman’s contract expires at the end of the season. PSG will be desperate to make a profit from the player and avoid him leaving on a free transfer in the summer.
It’s understood that PSG will only entertain a deal if they manage to land Everton’s Idrissa Gueye as a replacement for the 23-year-old.
Spurs need to bring in reinforcements as they face a tough playing schedule during the second half of their campaign, but they might have to compete with Barcelona for the France international’s signature. Pochettino did not make any signings in the summer and Spurs’ chequebook remains unused in January, with the transfer window due to close on the 31st.
The transfer rumours have got some Tottenham fans excited, but it is not just the supporters. Rabiot’s former PSG team-mate Serge Aurier has posted on Instagram of his hopes of a reunion.
Is Rabiot a good signing for Spurs?
Rabiot has the potential to be one of the best midfielders in Europe. His talents have never been denied, as the 23-year-old’s control on the ball is second to none, he regularly finishes games with a 90%+ pass-completion rate and he has an excellent ability to break up play.
The Frenchman has also previously been hailed as a “complete player” by Spanish midfield legend Xavi.
“He could play for Barcelona no problem and he would adapt without a problem,” Xavi said in 2017.
“He knows how to organise the play, defend, dribble attack.
“He’s a complete player, just as much when he has the ball as when he does not.”
However, it’s the Frenchman’s attitude that has persistently caused problems for the midfielder. The French press were beside themselves when Rabiot removed himself from Didier Deschamps’ reserve list after being left out of the first team prior to the World Cup last summer.
One of the problems is that the player doesn’t seem to have a handle on his own affairs and is still relying on his mother, who doubles as his agent, to direct his fledgeling career. In 2015 his mum, Veronique Rabiot, handed in a transfer request citing his lack of playing time under Laurent Blanc, even though he was at the tender age of 20 and featuring frequently in the first team.
Pochettino has cultivated a harmonious dressing room in north London and Rabiot could be the player to disturb the apple cart. But £20m for one of the world’s most promising midfielders might prove an opportunity too good to miss.
