Martin Caceres goes straight into Allegri’s squad after returning to Juventus for the third time

The Uruguayan central defender has returned to Turin on loan after spending the last two years in Serie A with Hellas Verona and Lazio.

Although the bianconeri have a solid defence with captain Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and young player Daniele Rugani, they’ve added to their ranks with the Uruguayan international.

The recent departure of Medhi Benatia to Qatari side Al-Duhail and the limited playing time left in Andrea Barzagli has warranted the move.

Five things to know about Martin Caceres…

  1. He first signed on loan for Juventus in 2009, later making the move permanent in 2012, before moving to Southampton where limited playing time took him back to Italy with Hellas Verona and then Lazio.
  2. Despite being a central defender, Caceres is versatile and has played as a full-back as well as a winger.
  3. In his last spell at Juventus he won five Serie A titles and two Coppa Italia’s.
  4. He also managed to add a Champions League trophy to his name during his short spell at Barcelona, even though he only played 23 games in total for them.
  5. Juventus paid around £520,000 to bring the player from Lazio to Turin until June 30.

On the move, Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said, “Caceres is completing his transfer and, if all goes well, he could be available,” in reference to the side’s upcoming tie against Atalanta.

In the official statement from the club, Juventus were quick to heap praise on the player’s style. It reads “Caceres is one of those players who you can always tell wears his heart on his sleeve in his performances, whilst his goals have often been very important.”

Before going on to talk about his technique, “In addition to bringing his international experience and in-depth knowledge of the Juve world, El Pelado is a defender with great technique, dynamism and flexibility, being able to play both in a central position and on the flanks, with an enviable eye for goal.”

Caceres comes back to a Juve side riding high

Caceres joins an in-form side who have yet to lose in the league. Juventus, having dropped only four points in the league, also boast the best goals-against record, having been beaten only 12 times.

Going by the strength of their backline, it’s a testament to the faith the Turin giants have in his abilities.

Allegri elaborated to the BBC that, “Martin Caceres is not a makeshift solution, but a strong choice, because Medhi Benatia has asked to leave.

“I know Caceres and he can give a lot to Juventus.

“He is a player who is ready to go here, while others would take more time settling in, learning the environment.”
