Latest Chelsea transfer deal "certainly dark" for one Blues player's future

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has confirmed that he is considering an exit from the club.

The Blues have just signed Gonzalo Higuain on loan from Serie A giants Juventus until the end of the season.

Should Chelsea keep Giroud? Here is what you need to know…

  1. Giroud joined Chelsea from fellow Londoners Arsenal in January 2018.
  2. The Frenchman has made 45 appearances for the Blues, scoring 10 goals.
  3. He has largely been used as a substitute this season, playing just one full match in the Premier League.
  4. The club have decided to bring Higuain to the club on loan in a bid to try and get the side scoring more goals.

Speaking to reporters prior to Higuain’s confirmed loan deal, Giroud admitted that the arrival of the Argentina international at Stamford Bridge could spell the end of his short tenure at the club.

With first-team opportunities already hard to come by – with Sarri preferring to use Eden Hazard in a false nine role – the former Gunner has hinted a move away from Chelsea could be on the horizon.

“The coach makes Hazard play nine which is detrimental to strikers,” he told Canal (via the Evening Standard).

“But he is the best player I’ve ever played with.

“If the club decides to get another striker, like Higuain, it will certainly darken my future at Chelsea.

“I’ve never said no to a return to France. Lyon and Marseille are two great clubs. My priority is to stay in the Premier League though.”

What next for Giroud?

At just 32 years of age, the French World Cup winner still has plenty to offer.

His ability up front can still be effective; his hold-up play, strength and finishing capabilities are all qualities that has seen him establish himself as a productive Premier League striker.

He earned immense praise following his displays at last year’s World Cup where, although he failed to score, he played the majority of the tournament and received compliments for his teamwork and dependable presence.

A move away from Chelsea would be understandable, with Giroud still young enough to complete regular 90-minute matches, of which he is currently not getting at Stamford Bridge.

And while he has stated his preference to join a Premier League club, don’t be surprised to see him instead, make the move back to his native country, where he would surely ply his trade for one of Ligue 1’s best sides.
