Solskjaer: United will not be satisfied with top-four finish alone

Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has stated that the club is “looking to win trophies” this season and will not settle for a top-four finish alone.

The Red Devils are sixth in the Premier League, just three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, and will play the Blues in the fifth round of the FA Cup after beating Arsenal 3-1 in the previous round.

Could Man Utd win a cup double? Here’s what you need to know…

  1. After a torrid start to the season, Jose Mourinho was replaced in the Old Trafford dugout by Solskjaer.
  2. The Norwegian has overseen eight wins from eight games so far, bringing United within three points of the top four.
  3. The Red Devils beat Arsenal 3-1 in FA Cup fourth round on Friday, while they will face PSG in the Champions League last 16.
  4. United will play Chelsea in the next round of the FA Cup, with Solskjaer urging his not to settle for a top-four finish alone.

United are also in the last-16 of the Champions League, where they will face PSG, and Solskjaer, who has won all eight of his games in charge of the club so far, wants his side to go all the way in as many competitions as possible.

“We’ve got the Champions League, we’ve got the FA Cup, we can’t just say top four and that’s it,” the Norwegian said (via the BBC).

“We’ve got to look at ‘can we win something this year?’ I go into every single game as a Man United manager thinking we can win this game.”

Solskjaer won nine major trophies during his playing days at Old Trafford, including the 1999 Champions League, and it is the feelings he experienced during those successes that are motivating him now as a manager.

“If you win trophies, that’s a fantastic day for everyone in the club,” Solskjaer added.

“It’s just the best time of your life that day when you win because you never know when the next one is going to come, the manager always said enjoy this whatever trophy you win.”

Top-four finishes more important than trophies, says Pochettino

Solskjaer’s comments come after Mauricio Pochettino’s claims that a top-four finish is “more important” than winning trophies.

A heavily-rotated Spurs side crashed out of the FA Cup with a 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace on Sunday, just days after losing their League Cup semi-final against Chelsea on penalties.

But the Argentine doesn’t seem too disappointed at these defeats, with his side currently sitting third in the Premier League.

“Again we’re going to have the debate whether a trophy will take the club to the next level,” he told reporters.

“I don’t agree with it. It only builds your ego. The most important thing for Tottenham right now is to always be in the top four.”
