BBC pundit: Spurs have to 'do a Liverpool' to improve their squad

Tottenham Hotspur may have to sell star midfielder Christian Eriksen in order to improve the overall ability of the team according to Jermaine Jenas.

Spurs are going through a tough period with many of their main stars sidelined due to various injuries.

Should Spurs ‘do a Liverpool’? Five things you need to know…

  1. Christian Eriksen joined Tottenham Hotspur for £11m from Ajax in 2013.
  2. The Danish midfielder has gone on to make 255 appearances for the club, scoring 62 goals.
  3. Despite Spurs’ quality, their squad depth doesn’t compare to that of Premier League rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.
  4. The Reds sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for £142m last season but strengthened elsewhere and now have a side competing for the title.
  5. Tottenham didn’t sign a single player in the summer transfer window and are yet to sign in January.

Former Spurs midfielder Jenas believes the club could follow Liverpool’s transfer plan by selling one of their best players for a substantial figure, to then be reinvested into improving the overall shape of the squad.

A man of Eriksen’s talent would demand a big transfer fee, one Jenas feels could benefit Tottenham in the long run.

Speaking on BT Sport’s coverage of Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 away defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup fourth-round, Jenas said: “Liverpool sold Coutinho at a time when he was their best player.

“That hurt the fans but they used the money wisely and made a better team. For Spurs that might be Christian Eriksen.”

However, Tottenham have tried and failed before, not making the most of the transfer fee earned by selling Gareth Bale to Real Madrid in 2013.

Spurs at a critical point of the season

The thought of losing Eriksen isn’t something that would sit pretty with anyone associated with Tottenham Hotspur.

However, that notion shouldn’t be their main priority at present, with their growing injury list leaving the squad stretched across the last few fixtures.

Getting knocked out of two competitions – they lost to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final last week – in the space of four days has done them no favours, leaving Pochettino with a big job on his hands to save their season.

“It’s a huge job,” said Jenas.

“Unfortunately it’s come along in a week which could define their season because they’re going out of competitions. Maybe there’s a part of Pochettino thinking he should have rested a few players when he had the chance.

“Harry Kane’s was an impact injury, you can’t really legislate for that but they are suffering at the minute. To pick the players up and get them going again is his key job. He is one of the best in doing it and there’s no doubt in my mind he will have them ready for the game in midweek.”

Spurs host Watford in the Premier League on Wednesday.
