Italian midfielder Jorginho only gets criticism because he plays for Chelsea according to Blues teammate David Luiz.
The Blues have produced some disappointing performances across recent weeks and face a fight to keep their place in the top four.
Should Chelsea have signed Jorginho? Here is what you need to know…
- Jorginho moved to Chelsea this summer from Serie A side Napoli for £50m.
- The Italy international impressed in the opening months of the season as the Blues kept pace at the top of the Premier League.
- However, the club’s form and Jorginho’s effectiveness has weakened in recent outings.
- The 27-year-old has made 22 Premier League appearances, scoring just once and providing no assists
- Jorginho’s arrival has forced two-time PL winner N’Golo Kante out of his usual defensive midfielder position and further up the pitch, which has brought widespread criticism.
Chelsea centre-back David Luiz believes that his teammate has come under scrutiny largely due to the club he plies his trade for.
Discussing the fickle nature of playing for a club of Chelsea’s statue – where opinions can change match-to-match – the Brazilian defended Jorginho and praised his footballing credentials.
Speaking to the Evening Standard prior to the club’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg victory against Tottenham Hotspur, Luiz said: “It’s because he plays for Chelsea.
“When you play for Chelsea, a big team, you have to understand everyone is going to criticise you. But when things go well, everybody claps their hands for you.
“When you are at a big, big team you have to understand that this is normal. He is a player that has played at the top level for some time.
“He’s played for Italy, he’s played for Napoli, but it is something he has to get used to more at Chelsea.
“It is his first season in England — and that is never easy for anybody — but he is doing an amazing job.
“This Spurs match is as important a game for Jorginho as it is for everybody else.”
Have Chelsea answered their goalscoring problems?
The lack of goals for Chelsea this year hasn’t gone unnoticed by Sarri, who has decided to bring in outside reinforcements in an effort to get their season back up and running.
With Chelsea duo Alvaro Morata – who is set to sign for Atletico Madrid – and Olivier Giroud failing to net the goals needed to keep the side firmly in the higher regions of the Premier League table, Sarri has brought another former Napoli man to join up with the squad.
Last week they signed Gonzalo Higuain from Juventus on-loan for the remainder of the season after the Argentine cut short his loan spell with AC Milan.
The 31-year-old holds an impressive goalscoring record throughout his career but only managed five goals in 16 games for Milan this year, prompting his early exit from the San Siro.
Only time will tell if Higuain is a success at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea just about hanging onto their place in the league’s top-four.
