Denis Suarez wants to emulate Bergkamp at Arsenal

Arsenal new boy Denis Suarez wants to emulate club legend Dennis Bergkamp following the announcement of his loan move from Barcelona.

The 25-year-old Spaniard becomes the club’s sixth acquisition since Unai Emery succeeded Arsene Wenger as Gunners boss last summer.

What can Arsenal expect? Four things you need to know?

  1. Suarez joins Arsenal on loan until the summer with an option to buy.
  2. He leaves Barcelona, whom he joined from Manchester City in 2016, having played 71 times.
  3. Across his time at the Camp Nou he’s played in various positions: central midfield, attacking midfield and on the flanks.
  4. By joining the north London club he reunites with Emery who managed him at Sevilla.

A lack of playing time at Barcelona ultimately forced Suarez to consider his long-term future at the Camp Nou and despite penning a contract extension before leaving the likelihood is Suarez, who has made no fewer than 71 appearances (eight goals and 11 assists), has played his final game for Barça.

His move to Arsenal sees a reunification with Emery, who coached him during a previous loan spell at Sevilla, where they won the Europa League together. Suarez would ultimately play 46 times under the current Arsenal boss registering six goals and creating a further five for his teammates.

Having growed up in England, where he enjoyed his youth playing days at Manchester City, the native of Salceda de Caselas is more than familiar with his new club. Suarez, who only played twice for City’s first team, has identified two Gunners greats as inspiration for him: record goal scorer Thierry Henry and his namesake Dennis Bergkamp.

“One thing no one knows about me is that when I was little and I used to watch the Premier League on the TV, Arsenal were a team that really inspired me,” he told the club’s official website.

“I used to watch Bergkamp and Henry – they’re both legends of the club and hopefully we can follow in their footsteps.”

A former Celta Vigo youth player Suarez joined City’s academy in 2011 but was unable to establish himself in their first team. Barcelona swopped for his signature two years later and Suarez would subsequently enjoy loan spells at Villarreal and then Sevilla.

Under the auspices of Luis Enrique and his successor Ernesto Valverde he’d ultimately make 71 appearances in all competitions registering eight goals and 11 assists.

Suarez joins an Arsenal team chasing a return to Champions League football. He arrives with Emery’s men sitting forth in the table however level on points with Chelsea after 24 matches played and two ahead of a resurgent Manchester United.

His versatility, being able to play in central midfield or as a winger, gives Emery plenty of options going forward and Suarez could even make his debut against former club City on Sunday.
