Laurent Koscielny “cannot eat or chew'” after Romelu Lukaku collision

Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny has admitted he is unable to eat or chew after his collision with Romelu Lukaku.

Koscielny lasted 64 minutes in Arsenal’s FA Cup fourth round game against Manchester United in January before having to be taken off with what was feared to be a broken jaw.

When will Koscielny return for Arsenal? Five key things to know…

  1. Laurent Koscielny suffered an injury after colliding with Romelu Lukaku’s boot in Arsenal’s 3-1 FA Cup defeat to Manchester United.
  2. The Frenchman was sent immediately to hospital amid fears he had broken his jaw.
  3. Although X-rays confirmed his jaw was nor broken, the centre-back did have to undergo surgery to deal with resulting blood clots.
  4. Koscielny missed Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Cardiff City on Tuesday evening and is currently being reviewed by the club’s doctors on a daily basis.
  5. And the Frenchman has now revealed he is finding it hard to eat as a result of his injury.

The Frenchman had only recently returned from an ankle injury which had kept him out since the end of last season and was beginning to show form once more with a man-of-the-match performance against Chelsea on January 19.

But in his next game, Koscielny was the recipient of an accidental boot to the face from Lukaku, for which he had to undergo surgery.

And the Frenchman has now revealed the results of the challenge, and the subsequent surgery is making it hard to eat.

“Personally, Friday was tough. When the incident with Lukaku happened, I really thought my jaw was broken,” he told The Sun.

“It was so painful. I went to hospital and after some tests and X-rays, it showed that, thankfully, it was not broken.

“I was so relieved, but I still needed some surgery on Saturday to take out all the blood clots created by the impact.

“I still need time to recover because at the moment, I cannot eat or chew. Hopefully I will be back soon.”

Arsenal’s injury woes

One of the biggest problems for Arsene Wenger towards the end of his Arsenal tenure was the club’s constantly high list of injuries, often coming at crucial times.

That has continued under Emery this season with the Gunners squad being victims of various long-term absences.

Arsenal currently have six first-team players out injured, including Koscielny, three of which are not expected back any time soon.

Danny Welbeck was the Arsenal’s first long-term injury of the campaign when he suffered a broken ankle in a Europa League game in November, which is expected to keep him out until the end of the season.

Hector Bellerin is another Arsenal player out for the rest of the season having picked up a knee injury in the Gunners’ recent 2-0 win over Chelsea – having fallen to the floor without contact.

Rob Holding is also absent due to a knee injury, with the centre-back expected to be out until the end of the season, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Koscielny and Sokratis the more short-term absentees.
