Rio: If I could bring any player to Man Utd, I'd raid Liverpool

Rio Ferdinand has named Virgil van Dijk as the one player he would bring to Manchester United.

The Dutch centre-back has been a revelation since making a £75m-move to Liverpool in January 2018, winning more aerial duels (176) and making more interceptions (43) than any player at the club since he joined.

Ferdinand was holding a Q&A on his official Twitter account and was asked which was the one player he would bring to Man Utd if had the choice, to which he responded: “I’m going Virgil van Dijk.. the position we’re in most need!”

The ex-England international was also asked who he would pick between Jaap Stam and former teammate and centre-back partner, Nemanja Vidic, with Ferdinand picking the Serbian.

Van Dijk the best defender in the world, according to Puel

Leicester manager Claude Puel managed Van Dijk during his time at Southampton has become the latest in a long line of experts to name the Dutchman as the ‘best defender in the world’.

Puel feels Van Dijk held that status during his days on the south coast but has got even better since moving to Liverpool.

“When I came in at Southampton he was, of course, a good player and I said at the time that for me he was the best defender in the world, but he was in comfort and had habits,” he said.

“At Liverpool, he has took another dimension. He is a fantastic player. My feeling about him doesn’t change with Liverpool.

“He is strong, powerful, fast, technical, he can play under pressure without a problem. It is fantastic. At Southampton, he was the best defender in the world, but he confirmed it I think with Liverpool.”

Van Dijk has made 51 appearances for Liverpool so far with the Reds sitting top of the Premier League and reaching last season’s Champions League final.
