Lukaku jumps to the defence of ex-Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku believes former club boss Jose Mourinho deserves more respect.

Mourinho departed the Old Trafford club in December after a poor start to the season with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer taking over as caretaker manager.

Does Mourinho deserve better? Here is what you need to know…

  1. Mourinho took the top job at Manchester United in 2016 following his dismissal from Chelsea.
  2. The 56-year-old won the Europa League and EFL Cup in his first season at the club.
  3. However, form and relations with his players as well as Chief Executive Ed Woodward started to falter, with United’s style of play constantly criticised.
  4. Having started this season poorly, Mourinho was sacked as manager of Manchester United last month.
  5. Lukaku was brought to the club by Mourinho in 2017 for £75m and he has now defended his former manager.

Lukaku was speaking to reporters when he defended his former boss. The Belgium international striker told Eleven Sports: “I’m not going to compare the two managers.

“I believe that Mourinho has done a lot for this club.

“He won trophies, so I have a lot of respect for him.

“He is the coach who signed me.”

Manchester United play host to Burnley in the Premier League on Tuesday night, with the club looking to close the gap on fourth-place Chelsea.

Lukaku’s change of fortune

Belgium’s all-time top scorer is now enjoying life on the pitch with Manchester United, with caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer managing to get the best out of his centre-forward.

United have won all eight games since Solskjaer’s arrival – and Mourinho’s departure – and although Lukaku is yet to start a Premier League match for Manchester United under his new boss, that hasn’t stopped him contributing to the club’s fortunes.

Lukaku has scored three goals and provided two assists in six matches, including a great performance in Manchester United’s brilliant 3-1 victory away to Arsenal in the FA Cup fourth-round on Friday.

Scoring eight league goals so far, Lukaku is well off the pace in the goal scoring charts, with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah netting twice the amount.

However, with United’s turn of fortunes, Solskjaer’s faith in attack and Lukaku’s obvious ability, it won’t be too surprising to see the forward add plenty more goals to his name by the end of this campaign.
