Sarri calls for one player to show Chelsea some "respect"

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has urged Callum Hudson-Odoi to ‘respect’ Chelsea and its academy.

The wantaway winger has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich this January and handed in a transfer request last week.

Will Hudson-Odoi leave Chelsea this month? Five key things to know…

  1. Hudson-Odoi has just 18-months remaining on his current Chelsea deal.
  2. The teenage sensation is highly regarded in west London and has been tipped to make a breakthrough this season.
  3. However, playing time has not been as frequent as Hudson-Odoi would have liked and he has subsequently handed in a transfer request.
  4. The request came after Bayern Munich made an approach for the winger.
  5. The Bavarians have reportedly tabled four offers, with the latest believed to be in the region of £35m, but Chelsea have rejected them all.

Hudson-Odoi put in a starring performance as the Blues blitzed past Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup on Sunday, scoring a timely finish in the second half to secure a 3-0 victory.

And although the 18-year-old’s future has looked less than certain recently, Sarri has backed Hudson-Odoi to become ‘one of the best in Europe’, but should respect Chelsea’s academy for helping him get there.

“Callum is 18,” Sarri said. “He has to respect the club, the academy, everything. He has time. If you are one of the best young players in Europe, maybe the academy helped you. So you have to respect this.

“He is a very great player. He will become one of the best in Europe also in another team, but he has to respect the work of the academy coaches, I think.”

Sarri added that Chelsea will show greater patience in developing Hudson-Odoi than other clubs, insisting Stamford Bridge is the best place for him.

“It’s his home,” the Italian said. “We will be patient with him because he is a boy from the academy. I don’t know if, at another club, people would be patient with him after five or six matches. It is very difficult to go to another country and adapt immediately or play very well immediately.

“That is a difficult situation. It’s better for him to try to improve here. But that’s my opinion. I may not be right.”

Despite the strong words, Sarri confirmed he is ‘very happy’ with Hudson-Odoi’s performances so far this season, maintaining he will remain with Chelsea beyond the summer.

“On the pitch, I am really very happy with him,” he added. “I know the club told me that, in this window, he will remain with us for sure, and very probably also in the next. We are really very happy with this. He is improving on the pitch and he is the future of our club and the future of English football.”

Rudiger urges Chelsea to keep Hudson-Odoi

Chelsea centre-back, Antonio Rudiger, has also urged the club to do everything in their power to retain the services of their starlet.

It is believed the German giants are preparing a bid that will eclipse the £40m mark, but Rudiger believes the Blues should stand firm and reject any offers.

“What I can say is clear: Chelsea have to make him stay,” he said.

“It will be a pity if this young talent leaves us. He decides his future but Chelsea need to give him a new contract.”

Maurizio Sarri’s side face Bournemouth on Wednesday at Dean Court.
