Memphis Depay open to Man City move

Memphis Depay has set his sights high for his future after a blistering spell with French side Lyon.

After disappointing overall at Manchester United, Memphis has been a revelation in Ligue 1, as well as impressing on the international stage with the Netherlands.

Recently, Memphis told Dutch magazine Helden: “I want to go to a club like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich…”

Memphis spent his youth and early professional career at PSV Eindhoven where he became a fan favourite. In a highlight-reel moment, he scored a free-kick against Heerenveen to help his side lift the league title in 2015, for the first time since 2008. He also finished that season as the league’s top-scorer.

Attracting interest from numerous clubs, it was Manchester United, led by fellow Dutchman Louis van Gaal, that secured his signature and a move to the Premier League.

Despite proving to be a dangerous attacking presence, Memphis fell out of favour at United and featured mostly from the bench.

After only four starts in the 16/17 season, Memphis put pen to paper in a £16m move to Lyon and has subsequently become a fan favourite there too, mirroring his display at PSV, by helping his side bring home their share of the spoils by scoring a hat-trick against Nice to secure a Champions League spot.

Where next for Depay?

His form has continued into this season, with five league goals and seven assists in 16 games, it’s understandable that he’s looking to take another step up.

Although Manchester United included a buy-back clause in his contract, it seems that Memphis hasn’t factored in a move back there.

On his current situation, he said, “Lyon is a big club, but not one of the five best in Europe.”

“I want to go to a city that suits me and a club that suits me, to a team that really wants to play football. I always talk about Real Madrid, a royal club, white shirts with gold, gruesome, but I focus on now at Lyon and then we’ll see where I end up.”

Although the circumstances that surrounded his departure from United cast his future into doubt for many, he’s managed to regain his earlier promise at the French side and, still only 24-years-old, has a lot of room for development.

Given his proclivity to score or perform in important games, it might not be too long until we do see him at one of the ‘big five’ clubs that he mentioned.
