Liverpool midfielder James Milner is like a “player-manager” according to club teammate Georginio Wijnaldum.
The Reds will be hoping Milner’s influence continues as they aim to win their first ever Premier League title.
How influential is Milner? Here is what you need to know…
- James Milner moved to Liverpool from Manchester City in 2015 on a free transfer.
- The 33-year-old has previously won two Premier League titles with the Citizens.
- To date, Milner has made 158 appearances for the Reds, scoring 20 goals.
- The former Leeds United and Aston Villa player has shown his versatility, often playing at right-back.
Milner has shown off his experience in the colours of Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp’s side aiming to get their hands on the Premier League title by the end of the campaign.
Club teammate Wijnaldum has expressed his admiration for Milner, citing his attitude and professionalism as main factors to his influence, likening him to a manager as well as a footballer.
Speaking via the official Liverpool website, Wijnaldum said: “It’s not only his quality that he has shown this season but also the way he treats everyone, the way he tries to help the team; even if he’s not training or playing, he always tries to help the team stay sharp and be aware of everything that can happen. He is a manager in the form of a player!
“He was quite unlucky when he got injured [in December] but even then before games he came into the dressing room and spoke with the players, trying to keep them sharp.
“So he was always involved, even when he was not in the 18. He was still part of the team. He would try to help the players on training days and everything.
“He has a big impact on how we perform right now.”
Can Milner get a hattrick of PL titles?
Breaking through the Leeds academy all those years ago, Milner would have only dreamt of getting his hands on the illustrious Premier League trophy.
Alas, he now has two league titles to his name after his successful stint with Manchester City, winning the league in 2012 and 2014.
His experience will help Liverpool’s cause and give them a better chance of finishing the season as the best team in the country.
Despite his age, Milner is an extremely creditable member of Jurgen Klopp’s side and clearly by Wijnaldum’s admission, a worthy employee away from the pitch too.
Whether Liverpool can get their hands on the Premier League trophy in May remains uncertain, but with Milner within the ranks, their chances are no doubt increased.
