Anthony Modeste Cologne registration suspended by FIFA after controversial transfer

Anthony Modeste’s registration at Cologne has been suspended by FIFA, who claim his decision to leave Chinese side Tianjin Quanjian was not justified by unpaid salary.

Modeste spent two seasons in China but walked out on his contract with the Chinese club, who are in financial disarray, last year claiming that he had not been paid.

Can Modeste play for Cologne? Here is what you need to know…

  1. Anthony Modeste scored 45 goals in 73 games for Cologne before leaving for Chinese club, Tianjin Quanjian, in 2017.
  2. The Frenchman bagged 16 goals in 29 appearances during his time in China but left the club in 2018, claiming he had not been paid.
  3. Modeste has been training with Cologne since leaving China and recently signed a deal with the German club until 2023.
  4. Tianjin Quanjian have been in financial disarray after overspending but FIFA believe Modeste’s reason for leaving the club was “not justified”.
  5. This has resulted in FIFA suspending the deal pending further investigation.

The 30-year-old trained with his former club, Cologne, for whom he scored 45 goals in 73 games, for the rest of 2018 before recently signing a deal until 2023.

However, FIFA have ruled the switch invalid after the matter was brought before their Dispute Resolution Chamber.

The chamber “rules that Tianjin Quanjian FC is required to pay the outstanding compensation to the player, but it has been determined that they (Modeste) terminated their employment with Tianjin Quanjian FC without good reason,” said FIFA in a statement.

Cologne are currently second in the Second Bundesliga, just one point behind leaders, Hamburg.

‘Question of eligibility not related to Modeste-Tianjin Quanjian proceedings’

Despite the lack of clarity over the future of Anthony Modeste, Cologne appear to be confident that the Frenchman will be able to play for them in the near future.

A statement on their official website stated that FIFA’s verdict “did not deny that the striker had become a free agent” and that the question of eligibility is “not related to proceedings between Modeste or his former club”.

Their statement read: “The question of the eligibility is not related to the proceedings between Anthony Modeste and his former club, of which 1. FC Köln are not part of.

“Neither the FIFA verdict of December 2018 nor its rationale deny that the striker has become a contract-free player by the termination of his employment relationship with Tianjin Quanjian.”

Cologne’s managing director, Alexander Wehrle also appeared confident that Modeste will be cleared to play for the club.

“After many discussions in China and on the basis of numerous interesting information, on the balance of the situation, we arrived at the decision to apply for the eligibility for Anthony Modeste,” he added.

“We hope that the relevant associations give the permission to play in a timely manner and we look forward to seeing Anthony play again in the FC kit.”

Cologne’s next game is against Union Berlin on Thursday.
