Yannick Carrasco has been gathering interest from clubs like Milan, Inter and Arsenal after his recent performances in the Chinese Super League, but his agent has now ruled out a January move.
Moving East tends to take players out of the spotlight of European football, but it seems that’s not been the case with Carrasco who has impressed enough to stay on the radar.
Five things to know about Yannick Carrasco…
- Born in Belgium to a Portuguese father and Spanish mother, Carrasco could have lined up for any of those nations.
- Although his youth was spent in Belgium, his professional career began in France with Monaco.
- His first season there saw his Monaco side gain promotion to Ligue 1 with the help of his six goals.
- Carraco’s move from Monaco to Atlético Madrid was a huge personal achievement. They were his childhood team.
- He scored the late equalizer in the 2016 Champion League final against Real Madrid that took them into a penalty shoot-out. Unfortunately, his side lost, but he was the first Belgian ever to score in a European Cup final.
Having turned out 30 times across all tournaments for Chinese side Dalian Yifang, Carrasco has netted twice and kept his name on the radar of many major European clubs.
His agent Federico Pastorello told Sky Sports Italia, “It’s very unlikely he’ll move, as Dalian Yifang have formally taken him off the market.
“His name could be back in the headlines over the summer. In truth, the negotiations never really started. There were some shows of interest from Italy, but we never went beyond that.”
Particularly heavily linked with Milan, the winger would have offered the side dynamism moving forward, although there were reservations over his consistency.
Haven risen up through the ranks at Genk’s renowned academy, the same one as Kevin de Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois passed through, Carrasco always had ambition.
Reportedly eschewing his maths exams for football, writing only ‘I’m going pro’ on the sheet, he was sure to come good on his promise.
Pacey and spatially aware, Carrasco is well in the habit of turning up in important matches as, after guiding Atlético Madrid to the penalty shootout in the 2016 Champions League final with a goal, he scored his penalty too.
Beguiling runs showcase his agility and trickery on the ball making him dangerous in 1v1 situations. The discipline gathered from Diego Simeone’s Atlético side has also added a new dimension to his football, particularly in defensive scenarios.
That being said, he’s come under fire at his former club for holding on to the ball and making poor decisions with his passing, attributes that frustrated Atlético fans.
His unpredictable nature is also what endears fans to him and on his day he’s a creative powerhouse that sets the field alight. Too long spent in the Chinese league might not do him good, but six more months out of the limelight and pressure could help refine his finishing product and composure.
An eventual move back to Europe seems certain and while the manager will have a challenge on their hands, they may also have the raw materials of one of Europe’s most exciting wingers.
