Marouane Fellaini pictured at airport as China move edges closer

Marouane Fellaini has posted a picture of himself at an airport amid reports he is set to leave Manchester United imminently.

The midfielder has been a United player since the summer of 2013 and has made a total of 177 appearances for the Red Devils.

Is Fellaini surplus to requirements at Man Utd?

  1. Fellaini was a favourite of former United manager Jose Mourinho, who would often turn to the Belgian regardless of the opinion of the fans.
  2. However, he has played just 31 minutes of football under new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer; in fairness he has been struggling with a calf injury.
  3. The 31-year-old is out of contract at the end of next season but it appears the club is ready to sell now.
  4. BBC Sport claims Fellaini has agreed terms with Chinese Super League club Shandong Luneng.
  5. The Chinese transfer window doesn’t close until February 28, so the deal could drag on until late next month.

Fellaini played 177 times for Everton, too, before leaving Goodison Park for Old Trafford with former Toffees manager David Moyes.

It now appears his career at United is over after he posted an image of himself at an airport on Instagram this morning, corresponding with reports of an imminent transfer to Shandong Luneng.

Will Man Utd replace Fellaini on deadline day?

United don’t appear to be close to making any signings on deadline day, so it doesn’t look like a direct replacement for Fellaini will be recruited.

Solskjaer has plenty of other options in central midfield with the likes of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera and Fred all battling for a place in the team.

The Red Devils are reportedly close to doing one piece of business, however. According to Sky Sports, Anthony Martial is set to sign a new five-year contract with the club.

But it looks like Solskjaer will have to wait until the summer – when he will discover if he is United’s new permanent boss – to bring in new players.
