"No excuses" - Silva urged to wake up or risk Everton sack

Former Everton defender Martin Keown has warned manager Marco Silva to start producing positive results – or face the axe at Goodison Park.

Silva was appointed by Everton in the summer following a lengthy – and controversial – pursuit of the former Watford boss, but results have been disappointing.

Is Silva in danger of the sack? Five key things to know…

  1. Silva joined the club after leaving Watford in acrimonious fashion last year, with the club accusing Everton of tapping up the Portuguese.
  2. Following his summer appointment, Silva has won just 10 matches, while also drawing seven and losing 10.
  3. The Portuguese spent around £80m in the summer but the club are only 11th in the Premier League.
  4. Everton’s majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri has recently warned Silva that the club’s league position is “not good enough”.
  5. Silva came in for fresh criticism following the club’s 3-2 defeat to Millwall in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Keown believes expectations are higher than when David Moyes was in charge because the money being spent is far more extensive, with the club spending over £200m in the previous two summer windows.

As such, the pundit has forewarned the Portuguese tactician to improve performances as well as results or expect the boot in the near future.

Following the defeat to Millwall, Keown wrote in his Daily Mail column: “Marco Silva clearly has work to do. This loss to a side sitting 19th in the Championship was a serious blow to their season.

“What can they win now? They are out of the FA Cup, out of the Carabao Cup and sit 11th in the Premier League, 14 points off the top six.”

Keown likened Silva’s current predicament to that of his Watford tenure, where he started brightly but then saw results dip significantly, resulting in his dismissal this time last year.

He added: “Silva is in trouble and there are worrying similarities from his time in charge of Watford.

“After a strong start at Vicarage Road — he won four of his first eight Premier League games in charge — it all began to go downhill. The same is happening at Goodison Park now, with Silva’s side having only won twice in the league since November.

“The speculation around his being wanted by Everton was cited as the reason he ‘lost focus’ at Watford. So what is it that’s creating this lack of consistency now? Silva has no excuses and Everton will not wait to see if he can turn things around.”

Gueye going?

With the January transfer window reaching its conclusion this week, Paris Saint-Germain have stepped up their chase for a defensive midfielder.

The likes of Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure and Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl have been linked with the Parc des Princes, but Thomas Tuchel has made a move for Everton enforcer Idrissa Gueye.

The Ligue 1 champions reportedly bid around £21.5m for Gueye but Silva has since confirmed the club have rejected the offer, with the Portuguese coach keen to retain the services of his anchorman.

“My reaction is the same as our reaction as a club. We reject the offer. He is a really important player for us,” Silva told reporters.

“We do not put players in the market for clubs to buy. I can’t see the value of Gana in this offer. He is a player we do not think of losing at this moment. He is important for us.”

At present, no player in the Premier League has made more tackles than Gueye this season (83), so it is no wonder the Toffees are desperate to keep hold of the 29-year-old.
