Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has heaped praise upon caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer whilst poking fun at former boss Jose Mourinho.
Solskjaer took charge at Old Trafford following the departure of former United boss Mourinho at the back end of last year.
Solskjaer’s attacking pedigree: Here is what you need to know…
- In his playing days, Solskjaer made 366 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 126 goals.
- Now manager of the club, he has won all eight games since his arrival in December.
- United have scored 22 goals in that time, with their attacking prowess more evident under Solskjaer.
- The club are now only three points off fourth-placed Chelsea.
United midfielder Herrera has discussed in great detail the effect Solskjaer has had on the club since taking over.
More specifically, the Spaniard praised the freedom that they now play with, a stark contrast to Mourinho’s more conservative and rigid regime.
Speaking after United’s 3-1 FA Cup fourth round win away at Arsenal, Herrera said: “We are playing with no limits, yes – it’s exactly what Ollie brought to the team since the first day.
“We enjoy scoring goals and we enjoy defending together. You can see that when we are playing free with a smile and everyone is playing for each other then the results will come easier.
“We are doing great. It’s always beautiful to win. That’s why we play.
“Ollie has said we want to be a team that controls the game but sometimes that’s impossible.
“Sometimes we have to defend, but when we defend we know anything can happen because we have so many quick, attacking, offensive players.”
The attacking players “feel free”
Herrera – who has made 180 appearances in all competitions for United, scoring 19 goals – believes that the club’s new way of playing doesn’t just benefit him, but all of United’s key performers.
He continued: “I can make runs to be in the box, Paul (Pogba) can make runs to drive the ball forward, Ashley (Young), Luke Shaw is allowed to win the ball in the box and make a run even to the opponents’ box.
“Now I am allowed to go into the box soon after I defend. Even Nemanja Matic is allowed to shoot.
“Attacking players can feel free. As long as everyone defends when we lose the ball. And I think that is what we have now.”
United’s next match is at Old Trafford this Tuesday evening where they face Sean Dyche’s Burnley side in the Premier League.
Fans react to Herrera’s Matic comment
It seems Herrera’s thinly-veiled swipe at Mourinho has annoyed the Man Utd faithful, with many venting their annoyance at the Portuguese coach for not allowing Matic to shoot…
They weren’t allowed to shoot? WTF was Mou on?

Firing Josè was the best thing ever to happen to #mufc, what kind of football was that? Let's hope Mourinho FC are now seeing the light, Josè was a blood sucking vampire who was using our players as robots. I don't have any respect 4 him, Ole is now taking us to where we belong. pic.twitter.com/0vHVHMuHpA

A guy as nice as Herrera coming out to say this. Yet fans of this club still feel the players sabotaged the manager. He sabotaged himself. Nobody's bigger than United & that includes the Portuguese FRAUD!
