Alexis Sanchez advised to reverse Arsenal transfer decision

Alexis Sanchez could return to Arsenal, according to former Gunner Marc Overmars, who suggests the Chilean made a bad decision by joining Manchester United.

Sanchez moved to United in a protracted transfer saga a year ago, but he has since suffered from injuries and generally been unable to replicate the form he showed for multiple seasons at the Emirates and has rarely played.

Could Sanchez return to Arsenal? Five key things to know…

  1. He left Arsenal for Manchester United a year ago in a swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
  2. Sanchez scored 80 goals in over three seasons for Arsenal but has just five in 37 United appearances.
  3. He currently finds himself behind the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard.
  4. But Sanchez left Arsenal six months before his deal was up and reportedly wanted £400,000 per week to renew.
  5. And Emery admitted Arsenal could only sign players on loan in January due to their financial situation.

Sanchez ran his contract down at Arsenal and wanted a move away, with Manchester City also interested in the forward’s signature, but it was United that stole in for the player.

And with his stay in Manchester going poorly, former ‘Invincible’ Overmars believes Sanchez could rejuvenate his career back in north London.

“I have great respect for Alexis, because he did extremely well in Arsenal, but I do not know if it was a good decision to leave,” he told Chile Radio Station ADN Deporte.

“English football changes you, it turns you around, and it took me a step forward. Arsene Wenger arrived a year before me, Dennis Bergkamp made a big impression England. It was a fantastic time, I think we changed the history of the club a bit.

“These type of players were very important for Arsenal, because that’s where they take you to focus, after Alexis, Arsenal tried to sign another player like that, but he was not given, so he could go back to Arsenal.”

Can Sanchez return to form?

Many reasons have been mooted as to why the attacker’s form have dropped off so sharply, from burnout or injury to problems beyond the pitch; the Chilean is thought to have few friends in Manchester.

Against PSG, Sanchez looked especially poor and this caps an odd period in which the winger has simply been unable to tap into the new-found enthusiasm and performance level at United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

This season, Sanchez has three assists and two goals in 27 appearances. Even in an indifferent spell over the six months of the 2017-18 campaign leading up to his January move, he struck eight goals and made three assists in 25 games for Arsenal.

But it was reported today that United will be without Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial for between two and three weeks due to muscle injuries. It is a period in which the North West club face Chelsea, Liverpool and PSG in their Champions League second leg, possibly presenting Sanchez with both game time and the opportunity to make a confidence-boosting impact right when it matters most.
