Dele Alli reveals inspiration behind goal celebration

Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli has revealed who inspired this goal celebration, which went viral after its debut on the opening day of the Premier League.

The #DeleChallenge, which has no doubt led to thousands of sprained wrists across the country, has certainly captured the public’s imagination, with many baffled by the Tottenham man’s contortion, including Spurs team-mate Georges-Kevin N’Koudou and Manchester United midfielder Fred.

Speculation has surrounding the origin of the symbol and it had been suggested by some people on Twitter that the celebration was a tribute to Dajjal, an evil figure in Islam comparable to the antichrist.

However, the 22-year-old has revealed in an interview with Standard Sport that he learnt the move off Jamie Vardy’s children whilst killing time at a hotel during the World Cup.

“When we were at the World Cup, there were a few days when the families could come to the hotel,” he said.

“One afternoon, Jamie Vardy’s kids were around and they asked me if I could do it. I could but then I watched the other boys struggling, it was funny.

“I heard afterwards that Jesse Lingard’s brother had showed them how to do it, so I don’t actually know where it came from and who made it up, but when I was on holiday with my friends we all kept doing it, so I shared it.

“I didn’t think it was going to go as mad as it did. It’s just a bit of fun.”

Since its first outing during Tottenham’s opening-day win against Newcastle United, Alli has not been able to showcase the celebration, but will hope to do so when England face Switzerland in a friendly on Tuesday.

Alli played 90 minutes for the Three Lions in their 2-1 defeat to Spain at Wembley on Saturday, their first home loss under Gareth Southgate.
