After Antonio Conte’s dismissal from Chelsea at the beginning of the season, the manager decided to sue the club for damages to his career in a legal battle that is still on-going.
Made to wait 55 days after his side’s FA Cup victory, Conte and his legal team decided to take action against the club for effectively ruling him out of searching for a new club in time for the coming season.
Five things to know about Antonio Conte…
- He won the Serie A title five times with Juventus as a player before lifting it a further three times as their manager.
- During his three seasons managing Juventus, he won the Panchina d’Oro (Serie A Manager of the Year) in each one.
- Conte took the Italian managers position after Juventus and topped their Euro 2016 group, the first time in a major tournament since World Cup 2006. They were subsequently knocked out in the quarter-final.
- At Chelsea, he became the first person to win three consecutive Premier League Manager of the Month Awards.
- That season, Chelsea also set a new record for most wins in one season, with 30 of their 38 ties bringing them three points.
Speaking to Sky Sports Italia he said: “Chelsea is the past for me now. I don’t want to talk about it, especially as there is still legal action on-going between me and the club.”
Conte was paid £9m for the remainder of his Chelsea contract but is still seeking further compensation after the delayed dismissal hindered his opportunity of immediate employment and the club allegedly threatening to withhold the settlement.
Despite winning the Premier League title in his opening season and the FA Cup the following year, a fifth-place finish and subsequent missing out on Champions League football cut his time in London short.
Now though, the Italian manager also mentioned that he is keen to get back into football and is waiting for the right opportunity.
Having had success in all of his managerial positions, Conte is a highly-regarded coach and looks to have his eyes set on a move back to Italy with links to Inter and Roma.
In an interview with Sky Sports, he said: “I surely miss being in the dugout, but I had decided to have a year of rest and I’m very calm while I wait to know my new destination. I don’t know what it will be.
“I’m in Milan because I went to see the Atalanta-Juventus game, I came here from London and I’ll be in Turin tomorrow. I did not receive any offer from Italy.”
What next for Conte?
After Roma’s recent poor form under Eusebio Di Francesco, especially coming off of their 7-1 defeat to Fiorentina this week, Conte has been touted as a possible replacement for the Italian capital side.
Inter Milan, who are faring a little bit better than Roma, but are still struggling to meet the high expectations of their fans, has been another destination linked to Conte.
One thing it is safe to say, though, is a return to England seems unlikely. When asked whether he knew about Chelsea’s recent defeat to Bournemouth, he said: “Did they? I didn’t know about it. I was watching the Atalanta game.”
Conte had previously been linked to the post at Real Madrid following Julen Lopetegui’s sacking after his side succumbed to a 5-1 thrashing at the hand’s of rivals Barcelona.
At the time, Conte hadn’t felt the move to be right, which led many to anticipate his next position to be back in his home country.
As a player, it was in Italy, playing only for Lecce and Juventus, that Conte established himself as a tenacious workhorse in the centre of the park.
His first foray into management came at Arezzo in Serie B, which was largely unsuccessful. He was sacked and later reinstated, but failed to avoid the club’s relegation into Serie C1.
Spells at Bari, Atalanta and Siena followed until he arrived in Turin to steer the Bianconeri to three-consecutive titles.
Few know the Serie A better than he does and a move to Inter or Roma could be his route back into management. Both have high expectations, but Conte’s pragmatic style has earned him plenty of silverware to show that he has what it takes to rise to the challenge.
