‘Sometimes you want to praise Mendy, sometimes you want to kill him’ – Pep Guardiola

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says Benjamin Mendy needs to forget “a little bit the social media” if he is to realise his full potential.

The 24-year-old French left-back put on a man of the match as the Premier League champions brushed Arsenal aside 0-2 at the Emirates Stadium.

Mendy was involved in both goals, setting up Raheem Sterling and then Bernardo Silva, but that wasn’t enough for Guardiola who spoke of his frustration when it comes to the World Cup winner.

“And that is not good!” said Guardiola when one reporter in the post-match press conference put it to him that the City left-back was ‘everywhere’ against Arsenal.

“Mendy is… Mendy. Sometimes you want to kill him, and sometimes you want to say, ‘What a player!’. He can improve. Hopefully we can convince him to be calm and forget a little bit the social media and focus.”

Mendy joined City from French champions Monaco last year, but his debt season was marred by a serious knee injury which reduced him to only eight outings.

In total Mendy would enjoy 451 minutes of action but that didn’t stop him from collecting a Premier League winners’ medal.

Now fit and healthy he’s looking to make up for lost time with his stellar performance against the Gunners a reminder why the powers that be at the Etihad Stadium parted with £52m for his services.
