Unai Emery hints Danny Welbeck could solve Arsenal’s left-back crisis

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has hinted Danny Welbeck could be used as a left-back for his first Premier League game against Manchester City.

The Gunners will be without Sead Kolasinac who suffered a knee injury during a pre-season match against Chelsea, and also Nacho Monreal who only recently returned to full training.

New signing Stephan Lichsteiner is likely to start at left-back, despite the right being his stronger side, given his experience and Manchester City’s tough wingers.

But Emery has revealed Welbeck could be in contention after showing his abilities in training.

“Danny has multi-position possibilities – right winger, left winger, striker,” Emery told a press conference (via Metro).

“And, yesterday, he worked with us at left back. His performance was good!

“I like this positive spirit to help. I’ve said to him I want the best performance in his career, with better quality and data – more goals, more assists.”

Welbeck’s future at the club had been in doubt other the summer with the England international having been linked with a move away. But following the close of the English transfer window, only a European club would be able to lure the forward away from the Emirates.

The 27-year-old was part of England’s 23-man squad at the World Cup in Russia this summer, though only played 11 minutes as the Three Lions went on to finish fourth.

Welbeck’s Arsenal career

Joining Arsenal in 2014 from Premier League rivals Manchester United, Danny Welbeck has so far made 112 appearances for the Gunners across all competitions.

In that time, the forward has scored 27 goals and recorded another 14 assists including eight goals and six assists in his debut season.

Last year Welbeck hit 10 goals for the first time at Arsenal in all competitions, three of which came int the Europa League as squad rotation helped the Gunners to the semi-finals.
