Andy Cole has heaped praise on the improvement of former Arsenal winger, Serge Gnabry, after his performance for Bayern Munich against Liverpool on Tuesday.
Gnabry spent four years at Arsenal between 2012 and 2016 but managed just 18 appearances for the club before leaving for Werder Bremen – all after a failed loan spell at West Bromwich Albion.
How has Gnabry fared since leaving Arsenal? Five key things to know…
- Gnabry managed just 18 first-team appearances at Arsenal before leaving for Werder Bremen in 2016.
- The winger impressed there, scoring 11 goals in 27 Bundesliga matches, earning him a move to Bayern Munich.
- The Bavarians loaned the 23-year-old to Hoffenheim last season, where he scored 10 goals in 26 appearances.
- That form has seen him nail down his place in the Bayern first team, scoring seven goals in 27 games so far.
- Gnabry’s performance against Liverpool on Tuesday night has drawn widespread praise, with Andy Cole saying he’s “definitely improved” since leaving Arsenal.
Since that move, the 23-year-old has scored 28 goals in 81 appearances for Werder Bremen and Bayern, with a loan spell at Hoffenheim last season, and has shown vast improvement as a player.
That development was perfectly showcased in Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Liverpool, with Gnabry going toe-to-toe with left-back Andy Robertson and more than holding his own with two completed dribbles, three shots on goal and putting in a number of dangerous crosses.
Working as a pundit on beIN Sports, Cole was quick to notice the progress of a player who had been written off by most English fans.
“Considering he couldn’t get a game at Arsenal – they kept saying how talented he was, but couldn’t get a game – he’s gone back to Germany and he’s definitely improved,” Cole said.
“I’ve never seen Robertson get beat like that by anyone, in the Champions League or the Premier League, and today he had a difficult night and he knows he had a difficult night.”
Niko Kovac’s side put in a tactical masterclass to earn a 0-0 draw at Anfield and will now fancy themselves to progress to the quarter-finals with the home leg at the Allianz Arena coming at the start of March.

Arsenal fans react to sparkling Gnabry display
Given his struggles in north London, Arsenal fans would have been forgiven for dismissing Gnabry, who has four goals in five caps for Germany, as a top-class talent and losing track of his career.
Tuesday night, however, was a perfect reminder of just how talented the winger is after he took arguably the Premier League’s best left-back to task.
And, as always, Twitter was rife with reaction as a number of baffled Arsenal fans questioned where this performance came from.
Look away now, Alex Iwobi.
I had someone telling me yday they’d still rather iwobi over gnabry, take a day off mate iwobi would of missed this or tried to pass it. #afc https://t.co/YOLNEzOLKj

Surely we should have done everything we could not to let Gnabry go…

Not sure Arsenal made the right decision letting Gnabry move on
