Inter Milan have released a statement revealing scans undertaken on Mauro Icardi’s right knee showed no significant sign of injury.
The Argentine striker withdrew from the Nerazzurri squad last week against Rapid Vienna and was absent in the 2-1 win against Sampdoria on Sunday due to an apparent knee injury.
How has the Icardi saga unfolded? Five key things to know…
- Icardi was stripped of his captaincy last week in favour of Samir Handanovic.
- Luciano Spalletti revealed the striker took the decision “badly” and he immediately withdrew from the club’s Europa League squad.
- According to Italian news outlet FedeNerazzurra, he has been eating by himself at the club’s training complex.
- He recently posted a cryptic Instagram message throwing further doubt on his future and was not available on the weekend due to an apparent injury.
- Inter have now released a statement suggesting scans on Icardi’s knee have shown no difference to those taken at the start of the campaign.
Medical examinations took place on Icardi on Wednesday but the scans revealed no discernible change in Icardi’s right knee to the scans taken when he was injury-free at the start of the term.
The statement read: “Mauro Icardi underwent magnetic resonance this morning at the Istituto Clinico Humanitas of Rozzano because of painful symptoms before the right knee.
“The assessments did not show significant variations compared to the examinations carried out before the start of the current sports season.”
This has thrown further doubt on the two-time Capocannoniere winner’s future in Milan with relationships appearing tense and fractious at the San Siro.
The 26-year-old has been linked to a host of Europe’s top clubs, including Manchester United and Real Madrid, and that interest will only intensify after the latest plot twist in this ongoing saga.

Spalletti upset over Icardi situation
Following Inter Milan’s victory over Sampdoria at the weekend, manager Luciano Spalletti revealed his disappointment that Icardi failed to join in celebrations after the match.
The Italian tactician is a huge admirer of the clinical finisher but has confessed he was hurt his former skipper chose not to come into the dressing room afterwards despite being present at the stadium.
“I really appreciated that he was in the stadium and I would’ve appreciated it even more if he had come to the dressing room to celebrate with us afterwards, because it was a very important victory for the team and he is part of this group, so I imagine he was as happy with the win as we were,” said Spalletti.
“We want a return to normality. In a team, in a dressing room you all need to be working in the same direction.
“There are more steps to take, which are for him to come to the dressing room, to enjoy being a part of this very good group, to relish wearing Inter’s glorious shirt.”
Inter chief executive Giuseppe Marotta confirmed the club would offer Icardi a new deal, but that has since been thrown into doubt with the latest revelations.
