Chelsea defender David Luiz has insisted his teammates believe in the footballing philosophy of Maurizio Sarri.
Following the 6-0 capitulation against Manchester City on Sunday, Sarri held an emergency team meeting to discuss his tactics, and Luiz has now revealed the Italian got the full backing of his players.
What is the Chelsea players opinion of ‘Sarriball’? Five things to know…
- Sarri has recently come under fire for overseeing some less than convincing performances.
- The club had lost four consecutive away matches prior to victory against Malmo on Thursday.
- One key criticism has been deploying N’Golo Kante in a more advanced role but the Frenchman has revealed he is enjoying his new position.
- Sarri himself hit out at his players for not showing “battling” qualities.
- However, after a heart-to-heart meeting Luiz has revealed the players are fully behind ‘Sarriball’.
The Blues bounced back from humiliation in the north west at the weekend with a 2-1 victory against Malmo in the Europa League round-of-32 first leg on Thursday.
The performance came after Sarri tried to clear the air with his players and find out whether they believe in the system he is trying to embed in west London.
Asked by reporters if the players believe ‘Sarriball’, Luiz said: “Yes, because we have had many meetings already asking if someone doesn’t believe, they can say. Nobody said anything. It’s because everyone believes [in it].
“I think it is part of the process. We are doing what he wants us to do and we are trying to improve.
“We lost against maybe the best team in the world at the moment in Manchester City. They were better than us from the beginning to the end.”

Luiz went on to defend Chelsea’s recent poor form, insisted it is due to Sarri’s reign still being in its infancy.
He added: “We lost a few matches because it is part of the process. The teams that are at the top of the table now are ones with managers who have been there for more than three years.
“The most important thing is for us to keep our philosophy, to believe in what we are doing. We did that tonight (against Malmo), we were trying to play from the beginning to the end.
“[We have] An amazing future [under Sarri].”
“We need to have continuity and consistency”
Chelsea suffered their worst Premier League defeat on Sunday and slipped out of the top four a fortnight ago after Bournemouth ran riot at the Vitality Stadium.
The Blues conceded 10 goals in those two matches, but a 5-0 victory against Huddersfield Town was sandwiched between the defeats, and Sarri believes his side need to find some form of consistency if they are to break back into the top four.
“In the last period we’ve had the problem of up and down, up and down,” he said.
“4-0, 5-0 to us, 6-0… so we need to have continuity and consistency.”
Next up for the club is a blockbuster clash against Manchester United in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday night.
