How World Cup win left France & Spurs skipper Hugo Lloris feeling “empty”

Hugo Lloris has said he felt “empty” after captaining France to World Cup glory last summer.

The Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper helped France to only their second-ever World Cup victory in Russia but endured a mixed 2018.

Lloris’ mixed 2018: Five key things to know…

  1. Lloris suffered another trophyless season with Spurs last term but winning the World Cup erased any bad memories from the club campaign.
  2. Despite impressing in Russia, Lloris made a huge individual mistake in the final – thankfully France held on to beat Croatia 4-2.
  3. In October, Lloris was charged with drink-driving, receiving a fine and a driving ban.
  4. His form for Tottenham this season has been indifferent, with some excellent performances hindered by high-profile errors.
  5. Lloris has saved 78.02% of the shots he’s face in the Premier League this season, more than any other first-choice goalkeeper playing for a top six club.

There was a party atmosphere among the French squad and the nation’s supporters after Les Bleus brought the famous golden trophy home last summer.

But Lloris has revealed he was physically and mentally drained by the tournament.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: “I was completely empty in my body and in my mind. I needed a day to stay in bed and just stop.

“It’s a long tournament. It demands a lot of energy. And a lot of emotion. You try to enjoy your holiday and then the new season begins. Maybe when I retire, I will think a different way.

“It’s the consecration of your career. We put a stamp on France national team history and for the rest of our lives. That is something huge.”

Lloris: Tottenham need more time to win trophies

Lloris and Spurs took a big step towards the Champions League quarter-finals with an impressive 3-0 first leg victory in their round-of-16 clash with Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

They also remain in the Premier League title race, trailing the leading duo Manchester City and Liverpool by just five points.

But Lloris believes the lack of silverware in the club’s recent history shows Tottenham require more time to become successful.

He said: “We are Tottenham and we have the humility to say that in a different club, a bigger institution, they are used to winning – they won in the past, they win today and they will win tomorrow – because of the heaviness of the institution.

“When you wear the jersey of some clubs, you have this pressure every day.

“It’s not the case in Tottenham. There is a great history, it’s a great club. But it’s not the type of club that used to win every year. It needs more time.”
