It would be an understatement to say Real Madrid have had a bad week.
Santiago Solari’s side have suffered three home defeats in a row. If that wasn’t bad enough, two of them were against fierce rivals Barcelona and the other saw them exit the Champions League in the first knockout round.
Not only is their dream of lifting a fourth successive Champions League trophy over, Real Madrid are also effectively out of the La Liga title race having lost even more ground on leaders Barcelona.
Their Copa del Rey run has ended, key players aren’t performing and Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence if being felt more and more by the game.
Here are 12 jaw-dropping stats that explain Real Madrid’s historically bad week.
1. Four consecutive La Liga Clasico defeats at the Bernabeu for the first time ever
Madrid are in the midst of their worst ever Clasico home form having lost each of their last four meetings with Barcelona at the Bernabeu across all competitions.
2. Four defeats in a row across all competitions at the Bernabeu
It’s not only Barcelona causing Madrid grief. They have lost their last four home games, falling to defeats against Girona and Ajax either side of their Clasico disasters.
3. Waning central midfield
It was a bad few days for two of the game’s most renowned midfielders.Toni Kroos was dribbled past six times against Ajax, at least twice as often as any other player on the pitch, while Modric became the first Ballon d’Or winner not to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals since Kaka in 2007.
4. Failure to take chances
In the 1-0 La Liga defeat to Barcelona, Madrid created 12 chances to the visitors’ seven and had 17 shots to Barcelona’s 10. A failure to take their chances hurt them again on Wednesday as Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana made seven saves.
5. Gareth Bale’s Clasico record at the Santiago Bernabeu: LLLLLL
It’s looking increasingly likely Bale’s time in the Spanish capital is coming to an end, especially if his woeful Clasico record continues at the Bernabeu.

6. Heaviest ever home defeat in a European knockout match
Madrid are not used to losing knockout matches at home in Europe, let alone being destroyed by a side who haven’t won a Champions League knockout game since 1996/97.
7. Gerard Pique shows up Madrid’s defence
Barcelona stalwart Gerard Pique made more clearances (14) than the entire Real Madrid team combined (12) in the La Liga Clasico, showing up his opponents’ defensive negligence.
8. Ajax the first opposition team to score 4+ goals at the Bernabeu since 2015
The last team to score four at the Bernabeu was, of course, Barcelona in 2015.
9. Three-goal margin of defeat a sudden norm in Europe
Real Madrid have now lost each of their last two Champions League home matches by a three-goal margin. Before the 3-0 loss to CSKA Moscow in the group stages, they had never lost by that margin at the Bernabeu in the competition.
10. Ajax set new Bernabeu record with quick start
Madrid conceded two goals in the opening 18 minutes of a Champions League game at the Bernabeu for the first time ever on Tuesday night.
11. Ramos intentional booking backfires
The European champions clearly missed Sergio Ramos against Ajax after the captain foolishly picked up an intentional booking in the first leg. Madrid have now lost their last three Champions League home matches without Ramos in the squad.
12. Semi-final run comes to an end
Madrid have failed to reach the Champions League semi-finals for first time since 2009/10, which just about sums up their dreadful season so far.
