Spurs star Toby Alderweireld open to Ajax return

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld is not ruling out a return to boyhood club Ajax.

The 29-year-old Belgian centre-back’s current deal with the north London club runs out next June and there seems to be no rush to ink a new contract.

Alderweireld was the subject of an intense speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United in the summer. In the end he remained part of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, but it is fair to say he’s looking deep into the future.

“Never never say never”, he told Voetbal Inside when asked about the possibility of returning to Ajax.

“I had a fantastic time there, became champion a few times, the third star, so these are all very nice memories.

“When I go back, I will have something to teach and I do not want to go there without being able to contribute.”

Alderweireld joined Ajax’s illustrious youth set-up in 2004 aged 15 and would break into the first team under club legend Marco van Basten four years later.

He’d subsequently go on to play in no fewer than 186 matches for the Amsterdammers, mostly under Frank de Boer (113), in which he registered 15 goals and 12 assists whilst helping them win four consecutive league titles and two Dutch Cups.

It was there he forged a dependable central defensive partnership with compatriot Jan Vertonghen whom he reunited with at Spurs in 2015 following spells at Atlético Madrid and Southampton.

Since becoming a Spurs player, the Wilrijk-born footballer has gone on to make 118 appearances for the Lillywhites including featuring in all but one of the Premier League outings this season.
