Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson believes his side need to bring their best game if they are to leave Old Trafford with three points against Manchester United.
The old football adversaries will go head-to-head in a blockbuster clash on Sunday with the Reds looking to continue their pursuit of a first Premier League title.
How is the North West Derby shaping up? Five key things to know…
- Liverpool have been exceptional this season and head into the match joint-top in the Premier League, with a game in hand.
- Man Utd meanwhile have had upturn in fortune with the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
- Since taking the helm in December, Solskjaer has overseen 13 matches, winning 11 and losing just once.
- The club look revitalised under the Norwegian who has embraced a more attacking style than his predecessor.
- As such, Robertson believes Liverpool need to bring their ‘A-game’ to beat Man Utd.
Both sides contested midweek, with United reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals after a comfortable 2-0 win over Chelsea, while Liverpool played out a goalless stalemate with Bayern Munich in the Champions League round-of-16 first leg.
There was a characteristically rapturous atmosphere, which is so iconic to European nights at Anfield on Tuesday night, with Jurgen Klopp deploying a fully strength line-up, notwithstanding injuries.
However, the German has made no secret of his priority this season with Liverpool looking to win a first ever Premier League title, and rivals United will certainly try everything in their power to prevent that from happening.
As such, Robertson believes his teammates will need to produce a Grade A performance on the hallowed Old Trafford turf if they intend to leave with maximum reward.
Speaking to the club’s official website, he said: “It’s another huge game. The boys need to recover and we get going.
“I think it’ll be a bit of a different game than we faced the last time… under this new manager they’ve picked up and they’re a very different team, especially at home, and it’ll be a tough task.
“We need to bring our A-game and if we can do that then hopefully we’ve got enough to win.”

A game of two halves
Liverpool and Bayern Munich had not contested in nearly 40 years at Anfield, so many were expecting a lively affair on Merseyside, with goals galore.
Unfortunately for the neutral, the match petered out after a riveting 45 minutes, which saw the sides fight tooth and nail; and that change in intensity was not down to someone forgetting the half-time oranges, but rather a reduction in errors and increase in quality according to Robertson.
He said: “I think the first half was based on mistakes, really, I think both teams made quite a lot of errors in losing balls and it was all about regaining possession.
“That’s why it was probably so hectic and there was a wee bit more quality in the second half, that’s why it was probably a wee bit calmer. There wasn’t many chances [in the first half], but every chance that they got and we got came from mistakes so at half-time we had to cut them out.
“We were losing the ball in midfield and in crucial areas – I’d given the ball away, Trent [Alexander-Arnold] as well. We were all giving the ball away in crucial areas and it had to stop. I think second half we were better on the ball without creating anything, and so were they and that’s why there were probably so few chances in the second half.”
