Maurizio Sarri has said he would be unable to work if he didn’t focus on being Chelsea manager for a “long time”.
The Italian’s job security has come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks following a run of subpar results and performances from his team.
Is Sarri close to losing his job? Five key things to know…
- Recent defeats to Manchester City in the Premier League and Manchester United in the FA Cup have put Sarri under pressure.
- Chelsea are currently sixth in the Premier League – one point off the top four – after initially looking like title challengers at the start of the season.
- They could, however, pick up silverware at the first possible opportunity in the League Cup Final against Man City on Sunday.
- But Chelsea are known for being ruthless with managers, increasing the likelihood of Sarri losing his job in the coming weeks if results don’t improve.
- The Blues have failed to score in three of their last five games despite the January arrival of Gonzalo Higuain.
The Chelsea board is reportedly already considering a change in the dugout, while the club’s fans also appear to be losing patience with Sarri.
The former Napoli boss sees himself as Chelsea’s long-term manager but acknowledges results must get better quickly.
“I have to think I will be Chelsea manager for a long time or I cannot work,” Sarri told reporters.
“I am not sure but I must think this and want to work with a long term target.
“As I said before, it’s very easy, we need to win three or four matches in a row. That’s the only solution. I can understand very well the frustrations of our fans.
“There isn’t another way, we have to have good performances and results.
“In this moment it is very difficult to think we are able to win three or four in a row, but in football everything can change in one day.
“I think we need a good performance and result [against Malmo] and then with more confidence we can [win more games].”

Sarri not thinking about Man City cup final
Whether Chelsea pick up silverware on Sunday could be a major factor in Sarri’s future at the club.
But first the Blues face Malmo in an important Europa League tie, and Sarri says he is not looking past Thursday night’s game.
“Sunday is too far, we need to think of this match,” he said. “We must think only of this and after the match in the Europa League we can think of the other matches.
“They are a physical team and dangerous in the opposite box and in set pieces.”
