Suarez may only be a squad player for Arsenal, according to Alan Smith

Denis Suarez may not be more than a squad player at Arsenal, according to former club striker Alan Smith.

The Spaniard joined Arsenal on loan from Barcelona on the final day of the January transfer window, with an option to buy in the summer.

How often will Suarez play for Arsenal? Four key things to know…

  1. On Thursday, Arsenal confirmed their loan signing of Denis Suarez from Barcelona until the end of the season.
  2. The club also have an option to buy to midfielder at the end of the campaign, which many expect Arsenal to take up.
  3. Suarez could be thrown in straight at the deep end for his new club as the Gunners prepare to face Manchester City on Sunday.
  4. But former Arsenal striker Alan Smith thinks Suarez will be more of a squad player at the club.

Suarez, 25, was Arsenal’s only signing of the January window despite the club also having been linked with Ivan Perisic, Yannick Carrasco and Christopher Nkunku – all players capable of playing on the wing.

But given the Spaniard’s versatility, Smith believes Suarez will be more of a squad player than having a main role.

“Arsenal fans would have loved to have seen a little bit more business, but they did manage to bring in Denis Suarez,” he told Sky Sports.

“How much will he play though as you imagine he may be a bit of a squad player? Unai Emery knows him from Sevilla, he is versatile, while another young lad in Smith Rowe has gone out to Germany to get some game time.

“I do not think Emery would have given up on him and it will be good for his education, so hopefully he can come back a better player.”

Suarez could be in line to make his first Arsenal appearance this Sunday against a former club as the Gunners travel to the Etihad to face Manchester City.

Denis Suarez’s high hopes over Arsenal career

Alan Smith may not have full belief of Suarez’s standing in the Arsenal squad for the remainder of the season, but the player himself has high hopes of what he can achieve.

Having grown up in England, Suarez spent a lot of time watching the Premier League, Arsenal included. And the Gunners’ new man recently revealed his desire to emulate two Arsenal legends.

“One thing no one knows about me is that when I was little and I used to watch the Premier League on the TV, Arsenal were a team that really inspired me,” he said.

“I used to watch [Dennis] Bergkamp and [Thierry] Henry – they’re both legends of the club and hopefully we can follow in their footsteps.”
