Juventus sporting director Fabio Paratici believes his club will get the best out of Aaron Ramsey when he arrives in Turin.
Paratici sees Ramsey, who will join from Arsenal in the summer, fitting into the ‘mezzala’ role in a three-man midfield, a position he’s never been associated with before.
Can Ramsey work in the ‘mezzala’ position? Four things you need to know…

- Mezzala, at its simplest, is the Italian word used to describe the two outside players in a three-man midfield and is rather a position than a role..
- As such, it can be utilised by different types of players. Either a more attack-minded flair player or one employed to bolster the central space on the field could be a mezzala.
- And Juventus’ sporting director believes this is Ramsey’s best position on the pitch, despite having not played as one at Arsenal.
Ramsey, who will make the switch to Juventus after 11 years in London, can look forward to broadening his CV with a position that Paratici believes was made for him.
“Ramsey? We signed him because he’s a player that’s different to the ones we have. Has more technique, but less defensive and tactical,” Paratici told Gazzetta dello Sport.
“I think Ramsey has never found his best position, because he hasn’t played as a mezzala in a three-man central midfield. That’s his position.”
Such a move could see him sitting behind the attacking three, moving from the centre to a wider position in a role Paratici even likened to Simone Perrotta whilst at Roma.
Energetic and tenacious, Perrotta relied on his versatility in midfield to play in a variety of roles. It’s thought that Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri will utilise his box-to-box pedigree in the new role.

Can Ramsey be Juventus’ new Pogba?
Paul Pogba was the quintessential mezzala during his spell at Juventus, playing as part of the three-man midfield with Andrea Pirlo as the regista.
Drifting off to the left of centre, Pogba could use his strength and ability to run with the ball in both offensive and defensive capacities.
Ramsey will be expected to play a similar role and like both Pogba and Perrotta, to rely on his natural physicality and work-rate.
Paratici stated that there’s no one like him currently at the squad which may hint at the possibility of Juventus looking to restructure their line-up, accommodating for the addition of such a player.
After departing from Manchester United unceremoniously, Pogba quickly became one of the best midfielders in the world in Turin, thanks in part to being utilised in a position that fit his specific qualities.
If Ramsey can use his own attributes as constructively as Pogba, Juventus coaching staff and fans will be hoping that Ramsey is going to follow on a similar trajectory.
