Arsenal fans react to Emery's latest comments on Mesut Ozil

Unai Emery has insisted Arsenal ‘need’ Mesut Ozil, despite recent reports linking him with a move away from the Emirates.

Ozil has struggled for form this season, having provided just one assist across his 11 Premier League appearances so far, while he has only managed to created two big chances during that time.

Why would Arsenal get rid of Mesut Ozil? Five key things to know…

  1. Mesut Ozil was made Arsenal’s best-paid player on 1 February this year with a new contract worth a reported £350k per week.
  2. But since then he has started 16 of a possible 30 league games while assisting just twice.
  3. New manager Unai Emery has on more than one occasion left Ozil out of Arsenal’s squad altogether for “tactical reasons”.
  4. Ex-players have suggested Arsenal were wrong to award Ozil his bumper contract at the expense of others such as Aaron Ramsey, whose deal expires next summer.
  5. Emery, however, has now insisted Arsenal ‘need’ Ozil, praising his ‘commitment and quality’.

The debate surrounding Ozil’s effectiveness has raged on for some time now, but Arsenal manager Emery maintains that the German remains an important part of plans.

Asked if he still had a future with the Gunners, Emery said: “Yes, why not?”

Emery then spoke about Ozil’s importance to the Gunners, claiming the club ‘need him’.

“I want every player with a good mentality to help us and give us their characteristics and quality,” he insisted. “We need Mesut Ozil.

“Every player wants to play and be OK to help the team when we need.

“The frustration is the same for everybody when they didn’t play in a match.

“But I spoke with him and with regularity in the season, telling him what we need from him and he has the commitment to help us and the quality and the characteristics to help us.”

Arsenal face Burnley at lunchtime on Saturday.

Has Mesut Ozil been a success at Arsenal?

Ozil moved to Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013 for a then club-record fee of £42.5m.

The former Germany international has won three FA Cups during his time at the Emirates, as well as scoring 30 goals and providing 51 assists in the Premier League along.

However, there has always been debate surrounding his effectiveness, commitment and place in the side, with many fans taking to Twitter to vent their frustration at the 30-year-old.

However, Ozil still has plenty of support from other sections of the Arsenal fanbase.
