Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira is the signing of the season so far, and not Alisson, according to Robbie Savage.
Torreira has quickly become a fan favourite at the Emirates Stadium this season under new Gunners manager Unai Emery. The north Londoners had been on a run of 14 Premier League games without defeat before losing 3-2 to Southampton at St. Mary’s this weekend and the Uruguayan has been at the heart of that good form.
Why is Torreira the signing of the season so far? Five things you need to know
- Torreira moved to Arsenal this summer for £26.4m from Serie A side Sampdoria.
- The Uruguayan international didn’t play 90 minutes in the Premier League until September 23.
- Since then, Torreira has gone on to establish himself in the Arsenal starting XI.
- To date, he has made 17 appearances in all competitions
- He scored his first goal against north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Debating who is the best Premier League signing of the season so far on BT Sport (via the Express), Savage insisted that Torreira was the greatest deal of the summer.
“I would go Lucas Torreira, what he adds in the midfield of the mark, his tenacity,” said Savage.
Savage vs Sutton and Torreira vs Alisson
Savage’s opinion prompted BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton to respond in bemusement.
“He couldn’t get in the team at the start of the season…” said Sutton, with Savage responding: “Well he’s in it now and he’s performing very well Chris.”
“I thought we were talking about the whole season, aren’t we? And he couldn’t get in the team,” Sutton said.
Savage hit back: “Well he’s in it now, and he’s performing, and Arsenal are unbeaten in 22 games and he’s been at the heart of it.”
The former Celtic forward insisted Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson was by far the best summer acquisition, using his late save against Napoli in their Champions League win last week as a benchmark of the Brazilian’s importance.
However, Savage wasn’t convinced: “It’s just my opinion Chris.”
“Well, it’s wrong,” Sutton said sarcastically.
“People were talking about that save in midweek. Listen, I don’t think it was an unbelievable save,” explained Savage, which incensed Sutton further: “What? It was a huge save.”
Savage said: “The centre-forward hit it straight at him. It’s not an unbelievable world class save. In the context it was a huge save, it wasn’t an unbelievable save. I just think Torreira has made people better – look at Xhaka’s performances this season, I think he’s been superb, Ramsey when he’s come in has been very, very good. Torreira is the heartbeat of that side.”
Sutton then tried to get Savage in check mate – saying: “‘Where are Liverpool in the league? Top. Who has made the biggest impact? Alisson. It’s Alisson over Torreira! Where are Arsenal in the league?”
Aren’t they just an exhausting pair of pundits?
