Spurs midfielder seeking Arsenal revenge

Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks is keen to exact revenge on Arsenal after the 4-2 defeat in the north London derby at the start of the month.

Spurs and Arsenal will lock horns for the second time in just over a fortnight when they contest in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

How did Spurs fare in first north London derby of the season? Five things to know…

  1. Having taken a 1-2 lead at the Emirates, Unai Emery’s men fought back to clinch 4-2 victory.
  2. Jan Vertonghen gave away a penalty in the first-half and was sent off in the 85th minute.
  3. Spurs have now dropped more points from winning positions in the league against Arsenal (40) than any side has against another in the competition.
  4. After the match Pochettino suggested his side are now one of the most respected in the Premier League.
  5. Winks is now relishing the opportunity to make amends when Spurs travel to the Emirates on Wednesday.

Since defeat in the derby, Spurs have won three consecutive Premier League matches, and defied the odds to qualify for the Champions League last 16 after earning a commendable 1-1 draw with Barcelona at the Camp Nou.

Arsenal meanwhile also progressed through their group in the Europa League, but saw their 23-match unbeaten run come to an end on Sunday as Southampton clinched a 3-2 victory over them in Ralph Hassenhuttl’s first game in charge.

Winks is now looking to deal the Gunners a double blow when his side contest in another fiercely competitive north London derby: “It’s a massive game for us,” Winks told Standard Sport.

“It’s come quickly after we lost to them two weeks ago, so there’s going to be revenge on our minds. We want to put it right and, obviously, it’s a good opportunity to progress in a cup.

“That defeat was difficult to take. It’s never nice losing to anyone, especially our rivals at their ground. It was disappointing for us, the fans, the club, but we’ve put it right with our results since in the League and the Champions League. It’s important we do the same on Wednesday.

“Us players treat every game in every competition as important as the next. We want to win every cup we’re involved in. The League Cup is no different. Beating Arsenal is the  perfect opportunity to progress to the semi-finals.”

Lloris: North London Derby defeat will motivate us

Winks was not the only Spurs player talking up his side’s chances of inflicting revenge on Arsenal, as captain Hugo Lloris also suggested the 4-2 defeat will fuel his teammate’s motivation levels.

“Maybe it’s the good thing that we lost the Premier League game a few weeks ago because it is more motivation for us,” he said (via the Independent).

“There is no more bad feeling than when you get a defeat. You always try to analyse and make things that we will not repeat again. It is another opportunity and we will try our best to go through.

“Every game that you lose it hurts, but of course when you lead 2-1, it’s true that Arsenal is playing very well this season and it is a difficult team to beat but I think we have the quality to do it.

“It is important to take every competition seriously, whatever the competition is.

“Of course there is priority in the season but it is a League Cup game and if you go through there is a semi-final and a good chance.

“And then it is a derby so it is easier to prepare for because there always excitement and enjoyment to play that type of game.”
