Atletico Madrid deny agreement with Bayern for Man Utd target

Atletico Madrid have released a statement denying the club have agreed terms with Bayern Munich over the sale of defender Lucas Hernandez.

Hernandez, 22, is a key member of Diego Simeone’s squad and has been linked with a move away from the Wanda Metropolitano since helping France win the World Cup.

Why have Atleti gone on record? Five things to know…

  1. On Wednesday Spanish publication Marca reported that Bayern Munich were willing to pay Hernandez’s €80m (£72m) release clause.
  2. It was suggested that the Bavarians would secure his services in January.
  3. However, Atletico Madrid have made the unusual step of releasing a statement denying the rumours.
  4. The statement itself insisted Hernandez has no “intention to exit our club” and that Bayern Munich have also denied the report.
  5. Hernandez has been linked with a big-money move after his World Cup exploits: no full-back made more successful tackles than Hernandez during the tournament (16).

Bayern Munich are in need of an overhaul after making at tentative start to the campaign, and Hernandez was reportedly seen as the first marquee signing of what could be an expensive few transfer windows for the club, though Atletico Madrid have refuted claims.

In an article on the club’s official website titled “Bayern Munich, Lucas Hernandez deny deal to trigger buyout clause”, a statement read:

“Following the story published by the Marca newspaper on an alleged deal between Bayern Munich and our player Lucas Hernandez, according to which the German club is to trigger the Frenchman’s buyout clause in the January window, Atlético de Madrid wishes to state that, in conversation with our club, Lucas Hernandez has denied any deal with Bayern Munich and also any intention to exit our club.

“Additionally, the excellent relationship between Atlético de Madrid and the German club has led Bayern Munich to deny said operation during a conversation between officials of both clubs.”

The 22-year-old agreed a new contract with Los Colchoneros last summer, putting pen-to-paper on a long-term deal, keeping him in the Spanish capital until 2024.

Bayern tight-lipped on Hernandez

Bayern Munich will be in need of reinforcements as they look to chase down Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund after the winter break.

Hernandez, who has also been linked with Manchester United, would be a real coup for the club were they to make a genuine offer next month. Part of Didier Deschamps’ World Cup-winning squad, the Frenchman is a tenacious and attacking full-back, which would provide Niko Kovac some much-needed energy on the flanks.

Bayern CEO Karl Heinz Rummenigge also refused to rule out a move for the 22-year-old, but remained reticent regarding their transfer intentions.

“We will see if we will do something in January. We cannot confirm nor deny it,” he said.

“I have a great relationship with the Atletico Madrid president”.
