Cesar Azpilicueta hailed for performance as Chelsea end Man City’s unbeaten run

Chelsea right-back Cesar Azipilicueta’s performance is hailed after he helps bring Manchester City’s winning streak to an end.

Pep Guardiola’s men were looking almost indestructible this season in the Premier League as they went undefeated in 15 games, but a sensational performance from the Blues ended City’s unbeaten streak on Saturday evening.

Azpilicueta emerged from the game as one of the stand-out performers. The Spaniard had a tough job in Saturday  late kick off as he was tasked with coping with Leroy Sane’s electric pace on City’s left wing.

The right-back remained composed throughout the clash and demonstrated his experience with some excellently timed tackles and a sensational block in the first half.

The Blues spent most of their time off the ball at Stamford Bridge, with their opponents finishing the game with 62% of possession. All of Chelsea’s players had to remain on high alert throughout and Azpilicueta continued to play brilliantly in the second half, emerging as a true leader on Saturday evening.

The Spaniard’s remarkable defensive performance saw him make 13 tackles, the most made by a player in a single Premier League game since N’Golo Kanté’s 14 vs. Liverpool in January 2017, and it was a major part of the Blues victory.

Chelsea’s victory comes after their disapointing 2-1 midweek defeat to Wolves. The Spain international lamented his side’s performance at the Molineux Stadium and was determined to right those wrongs on Saturday evening.

Speaking before the game the Chelsea skipper emphasised the Blues’ need for a “big, big” performance from all his team mates, and the he seemed to have got what he wished for. “The only response that we can give is on the pitch in this game today,” Azpilicueta told ChelseaFC.com.

“We know we are facing a team that at the moment is unbeaten but it does not matter who is in front of us, the fans deserve a reaction from the first minute at the Bridge.

“We have to do a big game as a team, playing all together. We know that after a defeat it is not easy but there is no choice, we have to analyse what we did wrong and what we are doing well to try to win today.

“We need a big, big performance from everyone. Hopefully we can bring back the happiness to the club and the fans.”

The quality of Azpilicueta’s performance wasn’t lost on people watching the game, whom lavished the full back with praise on social media. Gary Linkear Tweeted: “Cesar Azpilicueta has been his customary brilliant self. Marvellously consistent footballer.”

And here’s how the rest of Twitter responded to the Spaniard’s excellent performance.
