Emery: Arsenal not far behind Liverpool

Arsenal manager Unai Emery believes his side are on the same level as Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur and that they are not “too far behind” Liverpool after their excellent start to the Premier League season.

The Gunners beat arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur 4-2 at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon in a hotly contested north London Derby.

Arsenal’s bright start to the season: Four things you need to know…

  1. Unai Emery took over as Arsenal manager in the summer, replacing Arsene Wenger who left after 22 years at the club.
  2. The Gunners are on an 19-match unbeaten run in all competitions.
  3. They haven’t lost since their away match to Chelsea, just the second game of the Premier League season.
  4. Arsenal are the second highest goalscorers (32) in the Premier League behind just Manchester City (43).

Speaking after the derby day clash which saw the red half of north London overturn a 2-1 deficit in the second half to earn the three points and gain ownership of any local bragging rights, Emery blushed over his teams progress so far this season.

The Spaniard told reporters who he feels his side are on the same playing level as both Chelsea and Spurs. He also noted how the Gunners were not far off the talents and consistency of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

“Some teams are more advantaged than us,” he told Sky Sports.

“One of which is very clear, Manchester City.

“The difference at the moment between Liverpool and [us] is not very big, but it is an important difference also.

“We are now in terms of points, performances and the goals we’re scoring, with Chelsea and Tottenham. This is the reality. We want to progress but we are not thinking of them.”

Arsenal vs Liverpool in the Premier League

Arsenal – as stated above – are the second-highest goalscorers in the Premier League so far this season. Liverpool are five behind in 27 goals but their goal difference is massively better than their London rivals.

The Reds have only let in five goals in 14 Premier League matches, with Klopp evidently succeeding on improving the Merseysider’s defence. Arsenal, in turn, have shipped 18 goals, 13 more than Liverpool.

Despite Arsenal’s fantastic run, they have lost twice this season to both Manchester City and Chelsea, two sides competing with Emery’s squad at the top end of the league.

Liverpool are yet to lose this season, winning 11 and drawing three of their 14 games so far.

Six points separate Liverpool in second to Arsenal in fourth but with a hectic Christmas period coming up, this could turn into any figure as the weeks go by.
