Gary Neville only ever considered two Man Utd teammates "world class" - Carragher

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has only ever considered two teammates as genuine “world class” footballers, according to Jamie Carragher.

United have been struggling of late and lost 3-1 to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side on Sunday.

Neville’s time at Old Trafford: Five things you need to know

  1. Neville spent 19 years at Manchester United after breaking through with the ‘class of ’92’.
  2. The former England right-back won eight Premier League titles, two Champions League honours and various domestic trophies
  3. He played alongside the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Rio Ferdinand.
  4. However, according to Carragher he only found two of these world class.
  5. In total, Neville made 602 appearances for Man Utd in all competitions, spanning nearly two decades.

Ex-Liverpool defender Carragher – who transformed from Neville’s former rival to punditry colleague – has revealed the two have previously discussed the quality of Neville’s former teammates, with only two names being mentioned as truly world class footballers.

Despite the array of riches among the United ranks across the years, Neville reportedly only considers current Juventus and all-round football star Cristiano Ronaldo and former United number one Peter Schmeichel as the two who had talent above and beyond anyone else.

Reflecting on a previous conversation between the two, Carragher told the Telegraph: “Gary Neville once told me he felt he only ever played with two genuinely world class players in his Manchester United career.

“One was Cristiano Ronaldo. The other was Schmeichel. That is how fundamental he was to United’s success.”

“One was Cristiano Ronaldo. The other was Peter Schmeichel. That is how fundamental he was to United’s success.”

Neville hasn’t always been Schmeichel’s biggest fan

Peter Schmeichel is considered one of the greatest goalkeepers the Premier League has ever seen by many within the football community.

Neville’s comments on the former Danish international come as no surprise, with the two stars winning copious amounts of silverware during their time together at Old Trafford.

However, things came to a head in 2002 after Schmeichel indirectly moved to city rivals Manchester City.

Lining up in the tunnel prior to a clash between the two Manchester sides, Neville refused to shake Schmeichel’s hand, prompting the right-back to discuss the incident years later via the Quickly Kevin, Will He Score? podcast.

“At the time when he came back, he [Schmeichel] played for Manchester City.

“You can’t play for Manchester City. I’m a United fan and I can’t play for Manchester City, I can’t play for Leeds and I can’t play for Liverpool. That’s just written in stone.

“You just don’t play for those clubs, irrespective of what happens.

“The other thing was at that time I hated everybody, we all did.

“Everybody hated us, we all hated everybody. That’s the way it was. With Sir Alex, you’re on an island and we were siege mentality.

“If you’re not on the island, do one, I didn’t shake hands with my brother when he was captain of Everton.”
